Limerick Mayor Secures €14.7 Million for City Development in 2026
Mayor John Moran of Limerick has announced a significant boost for the city’s development efforts in 2026, following confirmation from the Government of Ireland that he will have access to €14.7 million in funding. This financial backing allows the mayor to carry over unspent budget allocations from the previous year, providing an essential resource for advancing his priorities.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage informed Mayor Moran that the funding will be allocated for various initiatives aimed at enhancing the city. This year’s budget is notably higher than the typical €8 million the mayor usually expects, with approximately 40% designated for day-to-day operational costs, including staffing and community services. The remaining 60% is set aside for long-term projects, such as infrastructure improvements and building renovations.
“This funding gives us the certainty to now turn plans into visible progress, particularly in areas like housing, so that people can see delivery on the ground,” Mayor Moran stated. He emphasized that the investment aligns with his vision for Limerick, which focuses on enhancing liveability, health, and prosperity for all residents.
The increase in funds stems from approximately €6.1 million that was not utilized in 2025 due to delays in processing bills for major projects. Ordinarily, such funds would be forfeited, but an administrative arrangement allows for their inclusion in the 2026 budget. This exception was made possible through negotiations led by Mayor Moran, recognizing the start-up challenges associated with the city’s new executive mayor system.
The Government has clarified that this is a one-time exception, noting that unspent funds in future years will likely not be carried forward again. Mayor Moran expressed gratitude for the support, particularly highlighting Minister James Browne for backing Limerick’s ambitions.
“I want to sincerely thank the Government, and Minister James Browne in particular, for once again backing Limerick’s ambition. This funding ensures that our city and county can continue delivering on the vision I have set out—making Limerick more liveable, more prosperous, and more healthy for every person who calls it home,” he added.
As the city prepares for 2026, Mayor Moran’s focus remains on aligning the secured funding with projects ready to proceed. He is determined to ensure that the resources allocated translate into tangible benefits for communities throughout Limerick, marking a pivotal year for the city’s development trajectory.
