Murphy’s Irish Stout Sales Soar 666% in UK Market Surge
Murphy’s Irish Stout has experienced remarkable growth in the UK, achieving a staggering year-on-year sales increase of 666% in value and a volume rise of 607%. The stout’s parent company, Heineken UK, announced a price freeze on the iconic Cork beverage for 2026, aiming to sustain its triple-digit growth trajectory in a competitive market.
The UK stands as the world’s largest market for stout, valued at more than €1 billion. Murphy’s expanding footprint is evident, with over 1,550 pubs now offering the stout on draught, marking a significant increase of 480% in availability.
“Pubs are under sustained cost pressures yet demand for Irish stout keeps building,” noted Will Rice, the on-trade director at Heineken UK. “Murphy’s 2026 price freeze is about backing pubs and giving them price certainty on a brand that is soaring in popularity.”
The surge in Murphy’s popularity has been particularly pronounced this year. During the previous Christmas season, reports indicated that some pubs ran out of the stout due to high consumer demand. In response, Murphy’s orchestrated a unique marketing campaign, delivering free kegs to pubs in London with a van bearing the slogan “Good Things Come To Those Who Are Waiting.”
Additionally, Heineken launched a ‘Map O’Murphy’s’ initiative, showcasing all the locations across the UK where consumers can find the beloved stout. The revival of the stout category has paralleled the success of its competitor, Diageo, whose flagship brand, Guinness, has also seen a spike in demand.
The trend among younger drinkers to “split the G” has propelled Guinness sales to new heights. This rising popularity contributed to significant shortages last Christmas in Britain, where increased demand led to some pubs running out of the product. Heineken capitalized on this gap, positioning Murphy’s as a viable alternative for publicans in need.
In a related development, Diageo recently opened a new £73 million (€83.4 million) Guinness attraction in Covent Garden, London. This site features a microbrewery, restaurants, and bars, enhancing the experience for visitors while solidifying Guinness’s status as a leading brand in the market.
As Murphy’s continues to gain traction, the stout’s growth mirrors that of Guinness, which remains the fastest-growing major beer brand in the US market according to Diageo. The company reported that in the second half of fiscal 2025, Guinness became the number one draft beer in major metropolitan areas like Boston and New York.
In Ireland, Diageo is investing €200 million in a new carbon-neutral brewery at Littleconnell, near Newbridge in Kildare. This initiative will allow the company to increase Guinness production as it opens up capacity at the St James’s Gate facility.
As demand for Irish stout continues to rise, both Murphy’s and Guinness are well-positioned to capitalize on the booming market, ensuring that the love for these beverages remains strong across pubs and bars worldwide.
