Nearly 10,000 Children in Donegal Benefit from Childcare Support
A total of 9,866 children in Donegal received support through the National Childcare Scheme (NCS) in 2025, marking an 11% increase from the 8,894 children supported in 2024. This data was released by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth on the morning of the announcement.
Donegal’s Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue, attributed the rise in beneficiaries to the government’s investments aimed at making childcare more affordable. He expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am delighted to see nearly 10,000 children across Donegal are benefitting from the National Childcare Scheme.” According to McConalogue, the increase signifies a meaningful reduction in family expenses for many households in the region.
A significant factor contributing to the increased uptake is the 53% rise in the minimum hourly NCS subsidy implemented in late 2024. Nationally, the scheme supported 245,000 children in 2025, which represents a 12% increase year-on-year.
Future Support and Policy Changes
Looking ahead, further assistance is anticipated for Donegal families through the “Shaping the Future: The Early Years Action Plan.” Starting from September 2026, the income thresholds for subsidies will be adjusted. The lower threshold will rise from €26,000 to €34,000, while the upper threshold will increase to €68,000. This adjustment is expected to improve affordability for an additional 47,000 children from low-income families across the country.
McConalogue emphasized the importance of these changes, stating, “By increasing the income thresholds and introducing lower maximum fee caps later this year, we are ensuring that quality early learning and childcare is within reach for more families in Donegal.” He noted that these initiatives are essential for assisting parents who are returning to work or pursuing education, while also ensuring that children receive a strong start in their early lives.
The National Childcare Scheme represents Ireland’s first statutory entitlement to financial support for childcare, offering both universal subsidies and income-assessed assistance for children up to 15 years of age.
In closing, Minister McConalogue expressed gratitude to Norma Foley, the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, and her team for their efforts in implementing these vital programs. “It’s great to see such a notable increase in the number of children coming under the scheme here in Donegal,” he added, highlighting the positive impact of the government’s childcare policies on local families.
