Planning permission has been granted for the construction of eight new social homes in Rathmullan, located in County Donegal, Ireland. The approval was announced on February 11, 2026, following a special housing meeting held by the Donegal County Council.

The new housing development at Cosan na nIarlaí will include two one-bedroom units, two two-bedroom units, and one three-bedroom unit. This initiative is part of the council’s broader social housing programme aimed at addressing local housing shortages. The decision aligns with recent approvals, including four social homes in Laghey that received the green light at the end of January.

During the meeting, council members reported ongoing progress in various housing projects under the council’s plan. A recent tender process has begun for the renovation of the old fire station in Stranorlar, with expectations for work to commence by the end of next month. Additionally, several other approved projects are moving towards the tender stage, which includes a ten-unit scheme in Newtowncunningham, a fourteen-unit project at Oldtown in Letterkenny, and a seventeen-unit scheme in Derrybeg.

Milford is also set to see a new twelve-unit development, with tender documents currently being finalized. As part of the overall housing strategy, the council has successfully completed 403 social homes, while an additional 466 units are under construction, and 266 units are in the dialogue stage, reflecting a robust commitment to improving housing availability in the region.

These developments indicate a significant step forward in addressing the housing needs of the community, providing much-needed accommodation for families and individuals in Rathmullan and surrounding areas. The ongoing efforts by the Donegal County Council demonstrate a proactive approach to tackling social housing challenges, ensuring that residents have access to quality living conditions.
