Planning Permission Granted for Major Solar Farm in Kilkenny
The planning authority has approved a significant solar farm development covering approximately 189 hectares in South Kilkenny. This decision, made on February 13, 2026, comes with 42 conditions attached to the ten-year planning permission. The project encompasses various townlands, including Atateemore, Ballyhobuck, Charlestown, and Treanaree.
The proposed solar farm aims to install solar panels on ground-mounted frames, accompanied by essential infrastructure. This includes 27 single-storey electrical inverter/transformer stations, five spare parts containers, and three ring main units. Additionally, the development will feature underground electrical ducting and cabling, security fencing, CCTV, access tracks, and other necessary facilities.
Construction and operational access will utilize seven existing entrances from local roads, including the L3429 and L4783. Upgrades to these entrances are part of the planning conditions. There are also alternative access provisions for Parcel 4, which will connect via the Port of Waterford, ensuring efficient transportation during the construction phase.
Long-Term Vision for Renewable Energy
With an operational lifespan projected at 40 years, the solar farm represents a significant step toward renewable energy expansion in the region. The investment aligns with increasing global efforts to transition to sustainable energy sources, contributing to both local and national goals for reducing carbon emissions.
This development has garnered attention from local communities, some of which have expressed concerns about the impact of large-scale projects on their surroundings. As discussions continue, local leaders emphasize the need for communities to advocate for their interests against larger organizations involved in such developments.
The planning authority’s approval followed a thorough review of all relevant materials, including public submissions and additional information provided during the consultation process.
This solar farm project in South Kilkenny not only aims to bolster local energy production but also highlights the ongoing shift towards more sustainable practices in the energy sector.
