Shannon Airport Achieves Record Passenger Numbers in 2025

Shannon Airport has reported a remarkable surge in passenger numbers, welcoming over 2.3 million visitors in 2025. This figure marks the highest total in 16 years, driven by significant investment, the introduction of new routes, and recognition from industry awards.

Looking forward to 2026, Shannon Airport is set to operate 40 routes to various destinations across Europe, the United States, and the UK. This expansion includes the addition of five new routes in the summer schedule: Rome, Warsaw, Madrid, and Poznan with Ryanair, along with a Frankfurt route through Discover Airlines. Existing services will also see increased frequencies, including Aer Lingus’ popular Boston route.

In addition to enhancing its route offerings, Shannon Airport plans to invest over €40 million this year in critical infrastructure projects. These projects include a comprehensive upgrade of the immigration and baggage halls, improvements to taxiways, and a new thermal wrap for the external arrivals area, all aimed at meeting energy efficiency targets.

Interim CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, Ray O’Driscoll, emphasized the significance of the past year, stating, “2025 was a really positive year for The Shannon Airport Group. We achieved our highest passenger numbers in over 16 years and invested over €20 million in projects that have a tangible benefit to both passengers and our sustainability goals.” He noted that the total investment in the Group has reached nearly €200 million over the last decade.

The growth in passenger numbers during 2025 was significantly aided by new routes and expanded services. Ryanair introduced a fourth based aircraft at Shannon, representing an additional investment of $100 million in the region. The airline announced new destinations such as Madeira, Lapland, and Madrid, while also boosting frequencies on over ten popular routes.

Infrastructure and sustainability projects also experienced considerable progress. Over the past ten years, The Shannon Airport Group has developed over a million square feet of space across the airport and its commercial property ventures. This year, the construction of Blocks Y and Z at the Shannon Airport Business Park will add a combined 100,000 square feet of energy-efficient industrial space, addressing the park’s near-full capacity.

Innovative advancements continued at Shannon with the launch of the world’s first dedicated life science air corridor between the EU and the US, connecting Shannon to Wilmington, North Carolina, led by new tenant Frontier Scientific Solutions. Additionally, Galway-based firm Mbryonics, known for its efforts to deliver “the internet in space,” has leased a newly built, award-winning 40,000 square feet research and development facility in the Business Park.

The year also marked the 80th anniversary of the first scheduled commercial transatlantic passenger flight from the US to Europe, which landed at Shannon in October 1945. Celebrations included a community time capsule project and an 80-flights giveaway that garnered over 100,000 entries nationwide.

Notably, The Shannon Airport Group maintained its commitment to community support, raising €500,000 for charities over the past decade. The group welcomed Irish Olympian Sharlene Mawdsley as an Airport Ambassador and supported the Munster Rugby Women’s Team, which traveled on a Shannon Airport branded bus to victory in the 2025 Interprovincial Series.
