David Walliams Dropped by Publisher Over Inappropriate Conduct Claims

David Walliams has been dropped by his publisher, HarperCollins UK, following allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards young women. This decision comes after an investigation into the claims, which has raised significant concerns regarding Walliams’ conduct both in personal interactions and within the context of his public role.

A spokesperson for HarperCollins confirmed the decision, stating, “After careful consideration, and under the leadership of its new CEO, HarperCollins UK has decided not to publish any new titles by David Walliams.” The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to employee wellbeing and its established procedures for reporting and investigating such concerns. They further noted, “To respect the privacy of individuals, we do not comment on internal matters.”

Walliams, who gained fame over two decades ago through the television series Little Britain, transitioned into a successful career as a children’s author in 2008. Since then, he has written more than 40 books and short story collections, with total sales exceeding 60 million copies. In 2019, it was estimated that he and his publisher had sold books worth £100 million.

This latest news follows Walliams’ resignation from his judging role on Britain’s Got Talent in November 2022. His departure was prompted by the public release of a transcript containing comments he made about contestants during filming breaks. These comments included derogatory remarks about contestants, which were deemed inappropriate by the production company, Thames.

Following his exit from the show, Walliams expressed regret and clarified that the remarks were intended as private conversations. He stated, “These were private conversations and like most conversations with friends were never intended to be shared. Nevertheless, I am sorry.” His controversial comments included calling one contestant “a c**t” and suggesting that another contestant believed she was being pursued romantically.

In response to the fallout, a representative for Thames stated that Walliams’ language was “inappropriate” and that those involved had been reminded of their responsibilities regarding professional conduct on the show.

In a subsequent legal move, Walliams initiated action against Fremantle, the producers of Britain’s Got Talent, in the High Court. He alleged that the company had violated data protection laws by “recording, transcribing and retaining” private conversations over a decade. In court documents, he revealed that he had been grappling with severe suicidal thoughts following his departure from the talent show.

A spokesperson for Fremantle responded to the legal action, saying, “We had a long and productive relationship with David and so are surprised and saddened by this legal action. For our part, we remain available and open to dialogue to resolve this matter amicably. However, in the interim, we will examine the various allegations and are prepared to robustly defend ourselves if necessary.”
