Finn Wolfhard Reflects on the Journey of Stranger Things as Finale Approaches
Finn Wolfhard, best known for his role as Mike Wheeler in the acclaimed series Stranger Things, recently shared his reflections on the journey of the show as it approaches its highly anticipated finale. The series, set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, has evolved from a promising project into a cultural phenomenon since its debut on Netflix in the summer of 2016.
Wolfhard, now 22, recalls the early days when he joined the cast, filled with excitement yet uncertain about the show’s potential. “None of us knew that it was going to be a big show, especially how it hit pop culture as a whole – it was instant,” he said. The initial recognition he received within a day of the series’ release was the first indication of its remarkable impact. “I had gotten recognised in Canada,” Wolfhard added, suggesting that even the young cast had not anticipated the show’s broad appeal.
The young actors, many of whom were new to the screen, felt a sense of confidence during the filming of the first season. “We all knew it was a good show, or at least we were confident in it,” Wolfhard noted. Yet, he admitted that they believed it would attract more of a niche audience than the global success it ultimately achieved.
Celebrating a Cultural Milestone
Created by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things quickly became an iconic series, celebrated for its nostalgic homage to 1980s cinema and storytelling. The narrative revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a young boy and the ensuing supernatural events that captivate his friends and family. As the series progressed, it garnered significant viewership, with the fourth season attracting over 140 million viewers.
The show has not only resonated with audiences but has also influenced the music industry. In 2022, the inclusion of Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill” in a pivotal scene led to a resurgence of the track, propelling it back onto music charts worldwide, nearly four decades after its original release.
As the cast prepares for their final performances, the emotional weight of concluding their journey together is palpable. Wolfhard describes the filming of the last series as a mix of joy and nostalgia. “It was a year-long shoot, and then, leading up to the finale, we didn’t really read the script until the last two months,” he shared. He emphasized the emotional experience of witnessing their characters’ arcs conclude, stating, “It was incredibly emotional to read all that for the first time.”
Support and Growth Among Young Actors
Navigating the complexities of fame at a young age can be daunting. Wolfhard and his co-star Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, reflected on how their shared experiences helped them cope. Schnapp noted, “It was amazing to be around each other. Sometimes I feel like child actors, if they do get any recognition or fame, they have to do it alone.” He pointed out the importance of having a support system during their rise to fame, emphasizing that their camaraderie made the experience more manageable.
Wolfhard echoed this sentiment, stating that their collective journey fostered personal growth. “To do it without a group of people around the same age who were going through the same thing would make things way more complicated,” he said. This shared experience not only allowed them to thrive professionally but also contributed positively to their personal development.
As they filmed the final scenes, the atmosphere on set was charged with emotion. Wolfhard described the experience as unique, blending the professionalism required for filming with the nostalgic embrace of their shared history. “It felt different from all the other days,” he said, highlighting the anticipation that surrounded the finale.
The cast also had the opportunity to reunite with their families during the final filming days, further enriching the experience. Schnapp commented, “All of our parents were invited back, so they were all there again, which is very nice.” This sense of reunion added a special touch to the conclusion of their decade-long journey.
As March 2024 approaches, fans eagerly await the series finale, reflecting on the profound impact Stranger Things has had on popular culture and the lives of its young stars. For Wolfhard and his co-stars, the journey has been marked by growth, friendship, and a shared legacy that will resonate long after the final credits roll.
