Kilkenny Native Soars to New Heights with Emirates Cabin Crew
Éabha Sloyan, a graduate from National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), has embarked on a remarkable journey from Kilkenny to Dubai, where she works as a cabin crew member for Emirates, the world’s largest international airline. Over the past year and a half, Éabha has not only fulfilled her dream job but has also experienced transformative personal growth, traveling to over 42 countries, including popular destinations such as Bali, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo.
Growing up in Kilkenny City, Éabha and her sister, Doireann, attended Coláiste Pobail Osraí before pursuing their higher education. Inspired by Éabha’s experiences, Doireann has recently transitioned from a corporate career to join Emirates as well. This significant career shift reflects the allure of a lifestyle filled with adventure and global travel.
Experiencing Life in Dubai
Éabha describes Dubai as a vibrant, cosmopolitan city that offers a plethora of activities. “There is always something to do, whether it’s enjoying a pool day, visiting amusement parks, or trying new restaurants,” she states. The city’s safety and multicultural environment make it an appealing place to call home. Contrary to some misconceptions, Éabha found the city to be quite Westernized, allowing her to respect local customs while enjoying familiar aspects of life.
The training process for Emirates cabin crew is rigorous, spanning approximately seven and a half weeks at the airline’s state-of-the-art training centre in Dubai. Éabha emphasizes the importance of this training, which covers safety, medical procedures, hospitality, and uniform standards. This preparation ensures that cabin crew members deliver exemplary service and adhere to the highest safety protocols.
Career Opportunities and Personal Growth
Éabha’s role with Emirates has provided her with unique opportunities, including representing the airline at events like the Lions vs. Stormers rugby match in Johannesburg. “The atmosphere was amazing, and it was an honor to host guests at the Emirates corporate box,” she recalls. Such experiences underscore the diverse career paths available within the airline.
When asked about her influence on her sister’s decision to join Emirates, Éabha acknowledges her impact. “Doireann saw the adventures I was having and knew she wanted that lifestyle too,” she explains. As a result, Doireann is now training alongside her sister, further strengthening their bond.
Despite the excitement of constant travel, Éabha admits to occasional homesickness. “I miss my family and friends, especially my dad’s cooking,” she confesses. With a 96-year-old grandfather living in Kilkenny, maintaining family connections remains important to her.
As the festive season approaches, Éabha is looking forward to her first Christmas at home after working with Emirates. “I have ten days in Ireland to visit family and friends, and I can’t wait to relax by the fire,” she shares, reminiscing about last year’s Christmas spent in Dubai with new friends.
Éabha encourages others to consider a career with Emirates, emphasizing the benefits of travel and personal development. “Seize the opportunity and be brave in your pursuit of a career that offers wonderful experiences,” she advises. With regular recruitment days held in various cities, potential candidates have ample chances to explore what a career with Emirates can offer.
Éabha Sloyan’s journey from Kilkenny to a thriving career with Emirates illustrates the possibilities that await those who are willing to take the leap into the skies. As she continues to explore the world, her story serves as an inspiration for many aspiring cabin crew members.
