Kneecap Delivers High-Energy Performance at Dublin’s 3Arena
The Derry-Belfast rap trio Kneecap captivated audiences during their performance at the 3Arena in Dublin on November 3, 2023. Following a whirlwind year marked by a semi-fictional film about their ascent, the group showcased their ability to engage and entertain, blending humor with poignant political commentary throughout their set.
Kneecap, composed of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, opened their show with an energetic display that set the tone for the evening. The performance began with a provocative video addressing the use of Shannon Airport by the US military, yet the trio chose to keep overt politics largely in the background, stating, “no flags on stage, only bags.” This decision contrasted sharply with their previous year’s appearances, where they primarily focused on their Irish language activism.
The group’s political stance evolved significantly after their appearance at the Coachella Festival in April 2023, where they projected the message “F*ck Israel” on stage. This bold action triggered intense reactions online, leading to both condemnation and celebration. At the 3Arena, Kneecap reiterated their support for Palestinian causes and criticized rising rents in Dublin, attributing blame to landlords and tech companies. Their commentary resonated with fans, who have drawn comparisons between Kneecap and the iconic punk band the Sex Pistols, known for their disruptive energy and political defiance.
Despite their growing notoriety, some critics have expressed concern regarding the quality of Kneecap’s new music. Their latest releases, while politically charged, have not captured the same wit and creativity as their debut album, Fine Art. Nonetheless, the 3Arena concert featured a nearly complete performance of this successful album, highlighting both their political message and their knack for humor.
The evening included heartfelt tributes, such as a song dedicated to the late writer and broadcaster Manchán Magan. Kneecap’s ambition to perform at the 3Arena was evident, and they marked the occasion with notable guest appearances, including Limerick rapper Shane Davis and Dundalk’s The Mary Wallopers. The collaboration resulted in a unique hip-hop project, TPM, alongside a traditional a cappella rendition of the Dublin classic, Auld Triangle.
Kneecap’s performance included a powerful tribute to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, dedicating their track “Get Your Brits Out” to her memory while leading the audience in a chant of “Maggie’s in a box.” This moment is likely to provoke discussion across social media platforms.
As the encore commenced, DJ Próvaí engaged the audience by rapping from the crowd, further intensifying the atmosphere. They concluded the evening with a new song titled Recap, reflecting on their recent legal troubles regarding the display of a Hizbullah flag. The concert culminated in a communal singalong of Fairytale of New York, dedicated to Móglaí Bap’s late grandmother, Theresa Carleton.
Looking ahead, the future of Kneecap remains uncertain. Their ability to navigate the balance between controversy and musical integrity will be crucial as they continue to evolve. For now, the trio has solidified their reputation as a formidable live act, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained and eager for what comes next.
