Limerick Celebrates New Year with Vibrant Events from December 26 to January 3
A festive week of entertainment is set to unfold in Limerick as the city gears up for a series of pantomimes, live music performances, and celebrations leading into the New Year. From December 26, 2023, to January 3, 2024, residents and visitors can enjoy a diverse lineup of events that promise to engage audiences of all ages.
Weekend Highlights
The festivities kick off on Friday, December 26, with the beloved panto, Red Riding Hood, at the Lime Tree Theatre. For those eager for live music, The Prophets will perform at The Old Quarter, while the annual Limerick on Ice attraction at Arthur’s Quay Park offers a winter wonderland experience. The city also features a vintage toy display at 8 Sarsfield Street, showcasing toys from the 1890s to the 1990s, celebrating the joy of Christmas past.
On the same day, audiences can catch another panto, Cinderella, at the University Concert Hall. The interactive light and sound installation, Making Spirits Bright, at Harvey’s Quay invites visitors to engage with seventy-two illuminated pads that respond to footsteps along the river boardwalk, creating a playful atmosphere.
The weekend will also host the Christmas Racing Festival at the Limerick Racecourse, where racing fans can enjoy thrilling contests. The day culminates with a traditional music session at Nicholas Street, followed by tribute performances to Guns N’ Roses and Paramore at Dolans.
New Year’s Celebrations
As the week progresses, the excitement continues with multiple pantos running throughout the weekend. On Saturday, December 27, the performances of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Aladdin dominate the schedules at various venues including the Millennium Theatre and University Concert Hall. Additionally, the Christmas Racing Festival remains a highlight, and rugby fans can enjoy the match between Munster Rugby and Leinster Rugby at Thomond Park.
New Year’s celebrations will take center stage on December 31, with performances by the band Hermitage Green and The O’Malleys at Dolans. The week concludes with a New Year’s Day Sober Rave at Wickham Way, offering a vibrant, alcohol-free celebration for all ages.
As the festivities wrap up on January 3, attendees can enjoy various live music acts and the final performances of the pantos, including Red Riding Hood and Cinderella. The week promises to be a memorable experience, showcasing the spirit of Limerick during this festive season.
This event-filled week not only highlights local talent and cultural traditions but also offers something for everyone, making Limerick a focal point for celebrations as the city welcomes the New Year.
