Mario Rosenstock Brings Gift Grub to London’s Shaw Theatre
Mario Rosenstock, the renowned Irish comedian and impersonator, is set to bring his acclaimed show, Gift Grub, to London’s Shaw Theatre on February 7, 2024. Known for his sharp wit and remarkable ability to mimic famous personalities, Rosenstock has become a staple of Irish entertainment since the show’s inception in 1999 on Today FM, where it airs as part of the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show.
In an interview with The Irish World, Rosenstock expressed his excitement about performing in London, a city with personal significance for him. “I was born in London,” he shared. “I want all my Irish friends to come and storm the stage and bring some of their English friends along.” He emphasized his familiarity with British culture, noting that he has created numerous characters that resonate with both Irish and British audiences.
Rosenstock’s ability to adapt his material for different audiences is a hallmark of his success. He plans to incorporate topical English humor into the London show, including sketches that feature prominent figures like Boris Johnson and various football personalities. “During the show, you’ll have various things of Boris in a field doing his latest Daily Mail column,” he explained. “There’ll obviously be loads of football.” He also mentioned his impressions of well-known pundits such as Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho, who have previously expressed their appreciation for his work.
The artist has enjoyed remarkable success with his parody songs, including “Leave Right Now,” which became the Christmas number one in Ireland in 2005. His ability to create laughter through music has garnered him a dedicated following, and his performances have even attracted the attention of football stars. Notably, he recalled a memorable encounter with Mourinho, where the coach invited him to perform for the Chelsea team. “He said, ‘The boss really loves your stuff,’ and I went, ‘Who’s the boss?’” Rosenstock recounted with humor.
While many of his impersonations have been well-received, Rosenstock acknowledged that not every subject appreciates being parodied. He cited Michael Flatley as someone who struggles to understand the comedic intent behind his impressions. “He just doesn’t get it,” Rosenstock said. “The best characters don’t get it because that’s why they’re brilliant characters.”
As he prepares for his London debut, Rosenstock is aware of the current landscape of satire in the UK. He remarked on the diminishing presence of political comedy on mainstream television, stating, “Where’s the satire? Why aren’t people taking the piss out of politicians on TV at the moment?” He believes there is a pressing need for humor, particularly in light of today’s political climate, and sees his show as an opportunity to fulfill that void.
With a career spanning over two decades, Rosenstock has built a legacy in Irish entertainment. His unique blend of humor and commentary has resonated with audiences, and he aims to continue that tradition in London. “I would just love it to do well,” he said, eager to connect with a new audience.
Tickets for Gift Grub at the Shaw Theatre are currently available, and Rosenstock encourages fans to come out and experience the show. “Let’s pretend this is like a Six Nations game. We’re going over there to take the points,” he quipped, showcasing his characteristic enthusiasm and humor.
As the date approaches, Rosenstock remains enthusiastic about the opportunity to share his comedic talent with an audience eager for laughter and entertainment. For more information and ticket purchases, visit the Shaw Theatre’s website.
