Reflecting on his career, Compston recalls a memorable moment last year when he celebrated with actor Cillian Murphy after Murphy won a BAFTA. The two actors connected over shared experiences, particularly their collaborations with renowned filmmaker Ken Loach. Compston shared, “We just sat on the couch with his BAFTA between us and talked about Ken Loach, and it was lovely.” Both actors have deep ties to Loach’s impactful storytelling, which has shaped their careers.

From Teenager to Star

Compston’s first major role came when he was cast by Loach in Sweet Sixteen, a film that resonated with audiences and critics alike. At just 15, Compston saw My Name is Joe, which sparked his ambition in acting. He noted, “I was always interested in acting, but a working-class kid from the west coast — it just wasn’t something we did.” Loach’s return to Scotland for auditions led to Compston’s breakthrough, ultimately paving the way for his successful career.

Years later, Compston became a household name thanks to his performance in Line of Duty. The series has gained a cult following, with the anticipation for the new installment reaching unprecedented levels. “Nothing surprises me with that show anymore,” Compston remarked. “The last series just went haywire. In addition to his work on Line of Duty, Compston stars in The Revenge Club, which premieres on Paramount+. The series introduces six lonely strangers who, instead of finding emotional support in a divorce group, plot to take revenge on those who have wronged them. Compston describes the show as a “wild ride” that offers both laughs and poignant moments, touching on the complexities of divorce.

“I think why it’s such an appealing concept is because everybody’s got a little revenge fantasy in their head,” Compston stated. “When you get six people who are broken… that can be combustible.”

The narrative explores the characters’ descent into chaos as they seek justice, leading to unforeseen consequences. Compston explained, “They feel worth, feel they’ve got a bit of meaning in their lives again, but that quickly spirals.” The show is based on JD Pennington’s book, and Compston believes it offers a fresh perspective on marital breakdown.

Compston’s experience filming The Revenge Club was marked by camaraderie among the ensemble cast. He appreciated the creative freedom to experiment, stating, “It felt like a safe space to try stuff.” This collaborative environment allowed the actors to explore their characters in depth, enhancing the overall quality of the production.

Currently, Compston is balancing multiple projects, having recently joined the cast of a new series titled Red Eye, which will air in January. He humorously noted the challenges of switching gears from chasing a Russian spy to portraying a devoted father. “The job can mess with your head a wee bit sometimes like that!” he laughed.
