Michael Flatley Secures Last-Minute Court Ruling for Dance Show
Michael Flatley successfully obtained a court order yesterday, averting the cancellation of his highly anticipated *Lord of the Dance* tour, set to begin at the 3Arena in Dublin tomorrow, February 6, 2024. This dramatic turn of events unfolded after the dancer sought an emergency injunction at the Belfast High Court to prevent any disruptions from the management company, Switzer Consulting Ltd.
In a tense day marked by legal maneuvering, Flatley, 67, acted to terminate his contract with Switzer Consulting, which had attempted to halt the tour. In a statement following the court’s decision, Flatley proclaimed, “The show must go on, and it will go on.”
The situation escalated when Switzer issued a statement earlier in the day announcing the show’s cancellation “with immediate effect.” Flatley’s legal representatives quickly informed the court that approximately 7,000 fans, many traveling from as far as the United States and Canada, had purchased tickets for the performance.
Legal Battle Surrounds Show Ownership
The legal proceedings began when Judge Gerald Simpson learned that Flatley had moved to dismiss Switzer Consulting. The court heard that Flatley had served a termination notice to the company, which contested its validity. David Dunlop, Flatley’s barrister, indicated that multiple issues raised by Switzer would be addressed in a full trial. The judge agreed to a timeline for document exchange prior to the trial, during which Switzer seeks damages from Flatley for alleged breaches of contract and other claims.
During the proceedings, Switzer’s statement expressed regret for the cancellation, attributing it to an ongoing commercial and legal dispute that could not be resolved in time. Flatley’s team swiftly returned to court, securing an injunction that not only prevented Switzer from obstructing the show but also mandated the return of the set, costumes, and associated materials needed for the performance.
In a sworn statement, Flatley’s solicitor, Barry Creed, highlighted the damaging impact of Switzer’s abrupt cancellation announcement on both Flatley and the 50 dancers involved in the production. “The most recent action by [Switzer] has caused considerable reputational and financial damage to my client,” Creed stated.
Flatley’s Firm Stance Against Interference
Emerging from the court, Flatley expressed his relief at the injunction that would cease further disruptions from Switzer Consulting. “My service agreement with Switzer Consulting was terminated yesterday afternoon,” he noted, criticizing the company’s decision to issue a statement without his knowledge. He emphasized that the relationship with Switzer had ended validly, with a deposit of €500,000 lodged in a solicitor’s account awaiting the upcoming hearing.
This conflict revolves around control of the multi-million euro stage show, with Flatley recently pledging to deliver “the greatest show ever” in Dublin. He had previously overturned a court order from Switzer that barred him from making changes to the tour, a ruling that restricted his ability to communicate with promoters or venues.
Judge Simpson lifted the temporary injunction based in part on the significant deposit, which would cover any potential damages Flatley might need to pay to Switzer. The judge acknowledged the intensity of the allegations made during the case, including accusations from Switzer that Flatley intended to “hijack” the tour for personal gain.
As the situation develops, Flatley remains focused on the upcoming performance, which features 20 junior dancers, including 11-year-old Pippa McCann from St Ronan’s College in Lurgan, County Armagh. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime. I have dreamed of it since I was young,” McCann remarked, expressing her excitement about the chance to perform alongside talented dancers.
With all eyes on Dublin, Flatley’s determination to move forward with the show underscores both his commitment to the production and the passionate support of his audience.
