Nicki Minaj Declares Support for Trump at Controversial Summit
Rap artist Nicki Minaj has ignited controversy by declaring herself the “No. 1 fan” of Donald Trump during her appearance at the Trump Accounts Summit in Washington, D.C. The event, hosted by the Treasury Department, aimed to promote child investment bank accounts for newborns. Minaj’s endorsement comes amid a cultural backlash against Trump’s administration, particularly regarding its immigration policies.
Minaj announced her intention to contribute between $150,000 and $300,000 to the initiative, emphasizing the importance of early financial literacy. She stated, “I will say that I am probably the president’s No. 1 fan,” and expressed that criticism would not deter her support. “The hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more,” she added. This statement stands in stark contrast to the sentiments expressed by many in the cultural sphere who have condemned Trump’s policies.
The backlash against Trump has been mounting, especially following recent incidents involving the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in Minnesota. On January 7, 2024, Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent, prompting nationwide protests. Alex Pretti was killed shortly after, further fueling public outrage. Celebrities at the Sundance Film Festival have voiced their discontent, with figures like Billie Eilish and composer Philip Glass taking a stand against the administration’s actions.
In a stark juxtaposition to the growing cultural revolt, Minaj’s alignment with Trump has drawn ire from her fanbase, known as the “Barbz.” Many have accused her of betraying the LGBTQ+ community and have taken to social media to express their disappointment. One fan publicly denounced her support for Trump, stating, “Nicki Minaj has been problematic more than once, but her direct support for Trump… is the last straw.”
Minaj also received a $1 million Trump Gold Card at the summit, which she shared on her social media platforms. This card is said to provide a fast track to U.S. citizenship for those who can demonstrate substantial benefit to the country. This detail has raised eyebrows, especially since Minaj has previously mentioned her status as a non-citizen, having moved from Trinidad and Tobago as a child.
The summit highlighted Minaj’s recent shift towards right-wing politics, evidenced by her appearances at events like those organized by Turning Point USA. She has previously expressed admiration for figures such as Vice President JD Vance and has praised Trump for what she calls his “handsome” demeanor. Her comments now sharply contrast with her past criticisms of the Trump administration, particularly regarding family separations at the border during his first term.
As Minaj continues to embrace populist rhetoric, the fallout from her actions has resulted in significant backlash. Change.org petitions calling for her deportation to Trinidad have garnered hundreds of thousands of signatures, reflecting a broad sentiment that public figures should be held accountable for their influence.
Despite the backlash, Trump publicly praised Minaj, calling her “the greatest and most successful female rapper in history,” a statement that many in the music community might dispute. Trump expressed gratitude for her financial contributions and highlighted their partnership at the summit.
The cultural landscape surrounding Trump’s presidency remains fraught with tension, particularly in the wake of recent tragedies in Minnesota. Public opinion appears to be shifting against Trump, with an AP-NORC poll indicating that only 38% of U.S. adults approve of his handling of immigration—a significant drop from 49% in March 2025. The growing discontent reflects a populace increasingly vocal in their opposition to the administration’s policies.
Minaj’s recent actions and statements have positioned her at the center of a cultural debate, raising questions about celebrity influence and the responsibilities that come with it. As the turmoil surrounding Trump continues, it remains to be seen how Minaj’s support will affect her relationship with her fans and her standing in the broader music community.
