RTE Star Ronan Collins Leaves Broadcasting After 46 Years
Ronan Collins, a prominent figure in Irish broadcasting, has announced his departure from RTE (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) after an impressive career spanning over 46 years. His decision comes amid a challenging landscape for the national broadcaster, which has faced competition from commercial radio and television stations. Collins, who previously hosted a popular midday music programme, indicated that he could not reach an agreement with RTE regarding his future role.
Changing Landscape at RTE
The announcement follows a series of high-profile exits from RTE this year, including Claire Byrne and Joe Duffy. Byrne transitioned to rival station Newstalk, taking over the mid-morning current affairs programme previously hosted by Pat Kenny. She cited dissatisfaction with RTE’s salary cap as a significant factor in her decision, stating that she needed to maintain her “financial dignity.” Duffy’s departure marked his retirement after decades of service.
Collins made his announcement during an interview on The Six O’Clock Show on Virgin Media One, expressing that the current changes at RTE prompted his decision. “In the nature of the changes that are happening in RTE, it’s a good time to stop,” he said. “I couldn’t make an arrangement to continue; they wanted to go one way, and I wanted to go another, and it was as simple as that. I have no complaints.” His exit will take effect next week.
A Career Marked by Musical Talent
Ronan Collins has not only made a name for himself as a radio presenter but is also recognized as an accomplished musician. He has played drums with the Showband Show, which is currently touring across Ireland. His unique blend of broadcasting and music has earned him a loyal following, and many listeners are sure to miss his distinct style and engaging presence.
Collins transitioned to RTE Gold in 2022 after stepping down from his midday slot on RTE Radio 1. His departure raises questions about who will succeed him in this role, particularly given his popularity among audiences. As RTE continues to navigate its evolving landscape, the challenge of retaining talent remains a critical issue.
The impact of Collins’ exit, along with those of other notable figures, highlights the shifting dynamics within Irish media. With commercial stations increasingly attracting top talent, RTE faces ongoing pressure to adapt and innovate in order to maintain its relevance in the broadcasting industry.
As listeners await further announcements regarding programming changes, the legacy of Ronan Collins will undoubtedly be felt in the airwaves of Irish radio for years to come.
