The Gúnas Present Christmas Concert to Support Children’s Charity

The acclaimed all-female choir, The Gúnas, will host a Christmas concert titled “Songs of Peace and Joy” at St Mary’s Church in Limerick on December 17, 2023, starting at 20:00. All proceeds from this festive event will benefit the Children’s Grief Centre, which provides essential support to children coping with loss.

Under the direction of Rhoda Clery, who also teaches music at Árd scoil Mhuire School, the concert promises an uplifting evening filled with holiday spirit. The performance will feature special guests, including the Árd scoil Mhuire School choir, conducted by Nora O’Connor. Additionally, Diane Daly will perform on violin alongside her son, Liam Hunka, on cello, with Anne Cullen serving as the concert’s accompanist.

A highlight of the evening will be a solo performance by Holly Purtill, a sixth-year student at Árd scoil Mhuire. The Gúnas, based in Killaloe, have built a reputation for their engaging performances at local events, including fundraising concerts and Christmas celebrations.

Over the past four years, the choir has participated in remembrance services at both Limerick Maternity Hospital and University Hospital Limerick. Their talent has also been recognized at choral festivals, where they secured first place in the Female Choir Category at the Ennis Choral Festival and second place at the Navan Choral Festival.

“The heart of this choir is an abiding love for performance,” said Rhoda Clery. “The Gúnas love to perform, and the ethos of the choir is to entertain and have fun while doing so.”

Entry to the concert is free, although attendees are encouraged to contribute to the Children’s Grief Centre during a collection that will be held at the event. This centre plays a crucial role in helping young individuals navigate the challenges associated with bereavement, parental separation, or loss.

The Gúnas’ dedication to their craft and commitment to community support make this concert a significant occasion for both the performers and attendees. The choir invites everyone to join them in celebrating the holiday season while supporting a worthy cause.
