According to skincare expert Sally Foran, understanding how to repair and protect this barrier can significantly impact overall skin health, particularly for those with sensitive or compromised skin. As individuals grow older, the natural decline in essential components such as ceramides can lead to various skin issues, making barrier care even more important.
The Importance of Ceramides
Ceramides, which comprise approximately 50% of the skin barrier, are naturally occurring lipids that play a vital role in retaining moisture. As people age, levels of ceramides decrease, rendering the skin more susceptible to damage. Signs of a compromised skin barrier include redness, dryness, itchiness, and increased sensitivity. After cleansing, applying a hydrating serum while the skin remains damp is crucial, followed by a rich moisturiser to lock in moisture.
Foran emphasizes the significance of sunscreen throughout the year, noting that up to 90% of UV rays can penetrate clouds, making sun protection a year-round necessity. Additionally, avoiding micellar water, which contains surfactants that can strip natural oils, is recommended.

Incorporating a humidifier into living spaces can also assist in maintaining skin hydration, particularly during the winter months. Foran advises treating body care with the same attention as facial care, as clothing can absorb moisture and exacerbate dryness. Opting for gentle shower gels and applying body creams can help maintain skin health.
Dietary choices play a role too; increasing omega-3 intake can enhance skin barrier function. Foods such as oily fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to skin health. For those considering supplements, it is advisable to select options containing both EPA and DHA.
