Farmers Demand Transparency on Herd TB History at Sale
A significant majority of farmers in Ireland are advocating for the disclosure of tuberculosis (TB) history for cattle herds at the point of sale. According to a recent study conducted by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), approximately 80 percent of farmers believe that this information is crucial for ensuring biosecurity and making informed purchasing decisions.
The study, released on February 16, 2026, delves into farmers’ perspectives on biosecurity measures and their effectiveness. While many farmers acknowledge their awareness of existing biosecurity guidelines, they express a notable skepticism regarding the actual impact of these measures on herd health.
Deirdre Robertson, a Senior Research Officer at the ESRI, highlighted the challenges faced by farmers in managing biosecurity. She noted that the process can be both mentally and financially taxing, with many farmers feeling overwhelmed by the complexities involved in maintaining herd health.
The findings underscore a growing demand within the agricultural community for greater transparency regarding animal health history. Farmers argue that knowing a herd’s TB status would not only aid in decision-making but also strengthen overall biosecurity practices across the sector.
As the industry grapples with the implications of TB outbreaks, this call for transparency could potentially reshape how transactions occur in the cattle market. By sharing TB history at the point of sale, farmers aim to foster greater trust and accountability within the industry.
The ESRI study serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by farmers as they navigate the intricacies of biosecurity. With heightened awareness and advocacy for transparency, the agricultural community appears poised to influence policy discussions surrounding animal health and safety measures in the near future.
