Flu Deaths Rise to 17 as Cases Expected to Peak Next Week
A total of 17 people have died from influenza this winter in Ireland, with 62 individuals requiring admission to intensive care units (ICUs) due to severe symptoms. Health officials are warning that the flu outbreak is likely not yet at its peak. Dr. Seán Underwood, an emergency medicine physician at Cork University Hospital, highlighted the growing number of flu-like illness cases during an interview on RTÉ’s This Week program.
Dr. Underwood noted that patients of all ages are presenting with serious flu symptoms, adding pressure to the hospital’s emergency services, which also handle cases such as car accidents, heart attacks, and sepsis. He described the current flu situation as particularly concerning, stating, “A lot of people are really unwell with fever, severe aches, cough, and breathlessness.”
The doctor explained that the flu season has started earlier this year and that its peak coinciding with the Christmas period poses additional challenges. With children, who are known to transmit the virus effectively, gathering with elderly family members, Dr. Underwood expressed his concern regarding the ability of healthcare facilities to manage potential surges in cases after the holidays.
Despite the alarming statistics, Dr. Underwood pointed out that vaccination rates have improved compared to previous years, and the health service has enhanced its preparedness for the flu season. “We’re very thankful for our GP colleagues, for instance, extending their opening hours,” he said. He also acknowledged the public’s increased participation in vaccination efforts, which have been crucial in mitigating the impact of the outbreak.
In efforts to manage the situation, Cork University Hospital has increased its consultant presence over weekends to better accommodate the influx of patients. Dr. Underwood noted, “All this work has helped the health service to prepare, but it won’t fully overcome the issue of the need for increased bed capacity on an infrastructural level.”
To further combat the spread of influenza, some hospitals have implemented visitor restrictions. These measures aim to protect the most vulnerable patients and healthcare staff from potential exposure to the virus.
As flu cases continue to rise, the public is advised to remain vigilant and consider vaccination options to help curb the impact of this seasonal illness.
