Hospitals in Galway Strained as Flu Cases Surge
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has raised alarms over a significant increase in flu cases, placing considerable strain on hospitals in Galway. As of Monday, there were 60 patients hospitalised with flu at both University Hospital Galway (UHG) and Portiuncula Hospital. The majority of those affected are children and older adults, who are particularly vulnerable to the virus.
Since the onset of the 2023 flu season, laboratory testing has confirmed 363 cases of influenza in Galway, with 175 of those confirmed just last week. In total, 202 individuals have been hospitalised in the county since the season began.
In response to this surge, the HSE is urging the public to assist in controlling the spread of the flu virus within communities and healthcare settings. They have implemented visiting restrictions and infection control measures in hospitals.
Visiting Restrictions and Health Recommendations
Individuals exhibiting symptoms of flu—such as a high temperature, body aches, headache, sore throat, or cough—are advised to refrain from visiting patients in hospitals. The HSE recommends postponing visits until at least 48 hours after symptoms have resolved to mitigate the risk of transmitting the virus to vulnerable patients and healthcare staff.
A statement from the Saolta Group highlighted the necessity of these restrictions, acknowledging the impact they may have on patients and their families, especially during this time of year. The hospitals will permit only one visitor per inpatient each day. In wards managing flu outbreaks, visiting will be limited to compassionate grounds only.
These restrictions are temporary and may change based on daily case activity levels. The public is advised to check the HSE website for updated information regarding visiting policies in local hospitals.
Public Health Guidance and Vaccination Campaign
To further reduce the spread of infection, the HSE emphasizes the importance of vigilance among all hospital visitors. Regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitiser are strongly encouraged, and face masks are readily available within the hospital premises.
Patients are also reminded to consider alternative healthcare options before attending the hospital. The out-of-hours GP service and local pharmacies can provide initial advice and treatment for non-urgent conditions. The HSE stresses that those experiencing breathing difficulties or chest pain should seek immediate care by attending the emergency department or calling emergency services.
Due to the increased demand for services, patients seeking routine or non-urgent care in the emergency department may face long waiting times.
The HSE is urging all eligible individuals, including healthcare staff, to receive vaccinations against both flu and COVID-19 as soon as possible. Vaccination is crucial in preventing severe illness and reducing transmission to vulnerable populations. For more information on obtaining a vaccine, individuals can visit hse.ie, call HSELive at 1800 700 700, or consult a participating GP or pharmacist.
