HSE Allocates €36 Million to Transform Healthcare in Donegal

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has announced a substantial investment of €35,981,572 to enhance healthcare services across Donegal. This funding, revealed on March 5, 2024, is part of the HSE’s Building and Equipment Capital Plan for 2026 and aims to modernize healthcare infrastructure, thereby improving access to care for local communities.

Dermot Monaghan, Integrated Healthcare Area Manager for Donegal, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “This substantial investment represents a major step forward for healthcare services in Donegal. These projects will modernise facilities, increase capacity, and improve access to care for patients across our communities.” The investment focuses on developing both hospital services and community-based care, ensuring that residents receive high-quality treatment closer to home.

Key Projects Under Development

Several transformative projects are set to advance throughout Donegal, enhancing healthcare delivery. In Letterkenny, critical upgrades include the replacement and extension of a Community Nursing Unit, which will provide 110 beds, and the development of a Medical Rehabilitation facility. Additionally, plans are underway for a new surgical hub at Letterkenny University Hospital, alongside essential fire safety upgrades and the expansion of the Renal Dialysis Unit.

Other notable initiatives include the refurbishment of Community Nursing Units in Buncrana and Falcarragh, as well as the establishment of a new Primary Care Centre in Lifford. There will also be upgrades to the existing Chronic Disease Management Hub in Letterkenny to improve support accommodations for patients.

Community and Disability Services

The investment will significantly enhance community and disability services in Donegal. A new facility at the Cleary Centre in Donegal Town will provide adult day services for individuals with disabilities. Furthermore, several residential dwellings will be acquired and refurbished to support decongregation and promote community living within disability services across various areas, including Carndonagh and Stranorlar.

In addition, the Donegal Hospice will receive an extension to accommodate four new bedrooms, ensuring that family and visitor facilities are also improved, while maintaining the overall bed capacity.

These developments reflect a comprehensive approach to healthcare in Donegal, focusing on both immediate patient needs and long-term service enhancement. The HSE’s commitment to modernizing facilities aims to create a robust healthcare framework that prioritizes accessibility and quality of care for all residents.
