Irish Woman Learns to Walk Again After Encephalitis Battle
A 22-year-old woman from Ireland, Sophie Ella, is sharing her inspiring journey of recovery after being diagnosed with encephalitis in April 2020. Known for her vibrant social media presence, Sophie discussed her experience on LiveLine with host Kieran Cuddihy, accompanied by her mother, Celine.
Before Sophie’s diagnosis, Celine had been unwell for a week, leading them to initially believe they were both suffering from the same illness. Sophie experienced cold and flu-like symptoms and, during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, speculated that she might have contracted the virus. “I thought I had strep throat,” Sophie recalled.
Encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain typically caused by a viral infection, resulted in Sophie being hospitalized for four weeks without any family visits. Notably, she was the first person in Ireland diagnosed with the disease during the Covid-19 crisis. Celine revealed that during those critical weeks, Sophie’s survival was in jeopardy, describing the situation as “very touch and go.” At one point, she received a phone call to prepare for the worst.
Celine could not visit her daughter due to strict hospital protocols at the time. “The first couple of weeks were horrendous because I couldn’t have family around me, so I was at home on my own,” she said. Celine’s other daughter was also unable to return home due to the infection risk.
After stabilizing, Sophie faced the immense challenge of re-learning basic skills, including walking, talking, and feeding herself. She spent approximately seven months at home before being transferred to a rehabilitation hospital.
Support and Rehabilitation
Reflecting on her recovery, Sophie expressed gratitude for the encouragement she received from nurses and her father. “The nurses were very encouraging and my dad,” she noted. Celine explained the extensive nature of Sophie’s rehabilitation, stating, “She had to learn how to feed herself, how to walk, how to talk, all of that again.”
Once Sophie returned home, Celine decided they would not “waste a minute” and committed to living life to the fullest. The family has embraced each moment together, celebrating Sophie’s resilience and determination.
Sophie has gained a following on social media, sharing her journey and inspiring others. You can find her on Instagram and TikTok under the handle @_sophieellamakeup22. Through her experiences, Sophie highlights the importance of support and the will to overcome challenges, inspiring many who face similar battles.
