Limerick Man Raises €250,000 for Irish Cancer Society Over 38 Years
A dedicated volunteer from Limerick, Michael Quinlivan, has raised nearly €250,000 for the Irish Cancer Society over his 38 years of involvement with its annual Daffodil Day event. The 77-year-old resident of Thomondgate has participated in this flagship fundraiser for 38 of the past 39 years, selling daffodils and various gifts each March to support cancer patients and their families.
For four Saturdays every March, Quinlivan sets up a stall in the Milk Market, where he engages the community in his fundraising efforts. His commitment extends beyond the market, as he has developed a network of 60 shops across Limerick city and county that host donation boxes for the cause. This initiative also includes collaboration with former colleagues at the Revenue office located in Sarsfield House and various organizations in the region.
Since beginning his fundraising journey in 1989, Quinlivan has successfully raised €227,305 for the Irish Cancer Society. The impact of these funds is significant. For instance, contributions from Daffodil Day in Limerick last year facilitated 655 lifts to transport 74 patients to and from their cancer treatments. Additionally, the donations provided 310 nights of nursing care and 337 free counselling sessions for individuals affected by cancer.
Quinlivan’s unwavering dedication exemplifies the spirit of community support and the importance of fundraising initiatives like Daffodil Day. His longstanding commitment not only highlights the ongoing need for cancer support services but also inspires others to contribute to such vital causes. The funds raised through these efforts directly improve the lives of countless individuals and families battling cancer, showcasing the profound impact one person can have over nearly four decades.
