Portiuncula Hospital Unveils Innovative Wellness Walkways for Patients
Portiuncula University Hospital has launched two new Wellness Walkways aimed at enhancing patient recovery following illness or injury. These pathways are designed to promote health and wellbeing, marking a significant advancement in the hospital’s recovery initiatives. The walkways, which connect Garbally Ward and Orchard Ward, are already showing promising results in improving the overall recovery experience for patients.
Developed through a collaborative approach that involved various departments including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, and the Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service (PALS), the Wellness Walkways feature multiple stations. Each station offers a variety of physical and cognitive exercises tailored to support patients in their rehabilitation journey. This initiative allows patients to engage in gentle movement and mental stimulation while ensuring they remain in a safe and therapeutic environment.
Funding for this project was provided by the HSE Nurse Practice Development Unit (NPDU), underscoring the hospital’s commitment to creating health-promoting spaces that foster patient recovery and independence. The walkways exemplify how thoughtful design and teamwork can enhance patient care, according to James Keane, Hospital Manager.
“The Wellness Walkways are a wonderful example of how thoughtful design and teamwork can enhance patient recovery,” Keane stated. “By encouraging safe movement and cognitive engagement in a calming environment, these walkways support patients to regain confidence and independence as part of their recovery journey.”
Lisa O’Looney, a Senior Physiotherapist at Portiuncula University Hospital, emphasized the importance of the new pathways. “The Wellness Walkways provide patients with a safe and welcoming space to continue their rehabilitation beyond formal therapy sessions,” she noted. “They promote independence, build confidence, encourage physical activity, and play an important role in supporting the emotional wellbeing that is vital to recovery.”
The introduction of the Wellness Walkways highlights a progressive approach to patient care, focusing not only on physical recovery but also on the mental and emotional aspects of healing. This initiative reflects a growing understanding in the healthcare sector that patient recovery is a multifaceted process requiring both physical and psychological support.
As these walkways become an integral part of the recovery process at Portiuncula University Hospital, they exemplify a proactive approach to patient wellbeing. By fostering environments that encourage movement and cognitive engagement, the hospital aims to enhance the recovery journey for all its patients.
