Volunteers Honored for Life-Saving Care Amid Severe Winter Storms

Volunteers who risked their safety to provide essential care during severe winter weather events were recently honored for their remarkable contributions. The Health Service Executive (HSE) Mid West expressed gratitude to members of the voluntary emergency services (VES) for their tireless efforts in ensuring that vulnerable individuals could continue to access critical health and social care services during two significant weather disturbances in January 2025.

Recognition of Heroic Efforts

The celebration took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Limerick, where representatives from various organizations received accolades for their invaluable support. Among those recognized were the Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, and Galway Civil Defence, the Irish Coast Guard, the Irish Red Cross, and the Order of Malta. The role of colleagues from the Defence Forces was also acknowledged for their assistance during these challenging times.

In early January 2025, the HSE Mid West faced two severe weather events. The first event began with an eight-day period of extreme cold and snow starting on January 3, which was followed by Storm Eowyn, a red-level windstorm that struck on January 24. These conditions forced the HSE to suspend normal operations, placing additional strain on health services.

Delivering Critical Services

During this crisis, the dedication of voluntary emergency services and Defence Forces personnel proved vital. Together, they facilitated the transportation of 201 priority patients and 479 staff who were essential in maintaining frontline services. Their efforts ensured that care continued to be delivered to those in need, including patients requiring urgent treatments such as dialysis and mental health support.

House calls were made to a diverse range of service users, from newborn screenings to support for individuals aged up to 100 years. This comprehensive care was crucial for those who could not leave their homes during the adverse weather conditions.

The HSE established crisis management structures under the leadership of Regional Executive Officer Sandra Broderick. These included the Regional Crisis Management Team and the Severe Weather Transport Group (SWTG), which coordinated transport requests to ensure that the most urgent services could continue to be maintained.

At the recognition event, Maria Bridgeman, HSE Mid West’s integrated healthcare area manager for Clare, Limerick, and North Tipperary, presented plaques to representatives from each of the eight voluntary emergency services and partner organizations. Her remarks highlighted the essential role these groups played in maintaining care delivery amidst extreme weather challenges.

The collaboration between statutory agencies, including local authorities and An Garda Síochána, further underscored the community’s collective commitment to safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable populations during the winter storms.

This acknowledgment of the volunteers’ dedication serves as a reminder of the profound impact that community support can have during crises, ensuring that care reaches those who need it most.
