Activists from the organization BÁNÚ gathered in Connemara today to express their dissatisfaction with Minister for the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary regarding unmet housing targets set a year ago. They presented a letter outlining their grievances, emphasizing the need for tangible actions rather than mere discussions in the coming year.

The meeting highlighted concerns that, despite previous assurances, Minister Calleary has not made significant progress in addressing housing shortages in the Gaeltacht. Donncha Ó hEálaithe, chairperson of BÁNÚ, stated that the group was hopeful that the Minister would take their concerns seriously. He remarked, “We are looking for action rather than talk in the coming year.”

The group expressed their contentment with the Government’s commitment to allow Údarás na Gaeltachta to tackle housing issues, noting that the problem affects the next generation of parents who might wish to raise their children in the Gaeltacht. However, despite an increase in funding for the Department of the Gaeltacht in the 2026 budget, they pointed out a lack of capital funds allocated for housing initiatives.

According to the budget, only €16,204,000 has been earmarked for Údarás na Gaeltachta, a significant drop from the €27,000,000 allocated in 2006 for capital projects. BÁNÚ emphasized that adequate funding would enable the organization to develop necessary service properties and acquire additional land where needed.

The activists also expressed disappointment over the delay in the publication of planning guidelines for the Gaeltacht, which were initially promised in November as part of the National Planning Framework. These guidelines have been repeatedly postponed since 2022, with the new timeline indicating that the National Planning Statement for the Gaeltacht will not be available until 2027.

Ó hEálaithe warned, “As a result, there is a risk that new Development Plans will be prepared by planning authorities without any guidance for the Gaeltacht.” The delay in planning guidelines could hinder effective development in the region, leaving local communities without the necessary support.

In discussions with The Journal, Ó hEálaithe noted that the Gaeltacht has received more support from the Westminster Government through the Local Area Boards than from the current Irish administration. This comparative lack of support has raised concerns among activists about the prioritization of Gaeltacht issues within government policy.

BÁNÚ has also raised questions regarding the lack of elections for the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta, which have not taken place since 2012. They wonder if the Department is reluctant to hold elections this year, which would empower local residents to choose their representatives.

A formal request has been submitted to the Department for the Minister’s insights on the grievances raised by the protestors. The organization is actively seeking support for its initiatives aimed at enhancing the Gaeltacht region and ensuring that the local population receives adequate representation.

As discussions continue, the local community remains hopeful for urgent action that addresses their pressing housing and development needs.
