The annual Press Photographers Ireland exhibition has opened at the dlr LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire, showcasing the remarkable achievements of Irish press photography. This year’s event marks the 48th iteration of the AIB Press Photographer of the Year exhibition, which features award-winning and shortlisted images that capture the essence of life in Ireland and beyond throughout 2025.

Among the highlights is the work of Mark Condren, an accomplished photographer from the Irish Independent, who has recently garnered a record seventh Press Photographer of the Year title. This achievement further solidifies his status as one of Ireland’s leading photojournalists. Another notable contributor is Gerry Mooney, also from the Irish Independent, whose photograph of Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon at the launch of the 2025 National Ploughing Championship earned him the award for Best Public Relations photo.

Celebrating Visual Storytelling

AIB chief executive Colin Hunt commended the exceptional work of all participants, stating that these images “hold a mirror up to our villages and townlands.” The exhibition, the first stop on its national tour, has been welcomed by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Councillor Maurice Dockrell noted the exhibition’s potential to engage visitors with powerful visual storytelling. “Public libraries play a vital role in connecting people with culture, creativity, and new perspectives,” he remarked. “These powerful images invite us to reflect on the stories and experiences that shape life in Ireland.”

The exhibition features over 100 images and videos presented across multiple categories, showcasing the dedication and skill of Ireland’s finest press photographers. Frank Curran, chief executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, emphasized the cultural significance of the event, stating, “This event is a highlight in our cultural calendar and showcases the incredible work of Ireland’s press photographers.”

Preserving Authenticity in Photography

President of Press Photographers Ireland, David Branigan, praised Condren’s work as a vital reminder of the importance of authentic imagery in today’s world. He stated, “Despite the external noise of fake images and AI-generated doubt, Mark Condren’s work is a reminder of the need not only for truthful images but also technical skills and creativity.” Winning such a prestigious award positions Condren as a champion for all photographers.

The exhibition captures a wide array of themes, including news, daily life, sport, politics, and the arts, portraying both significant events and ordinary scenes from across the country and beyond. Condren, originally from Castletownroche, Co Cork, is celebrated for his human-interest photography and innovative imagery. His career began at local newspaper The Avondhu, followed by roles at The Corkman and the Sunday Tribune.

The AIB Press Photographer of the Year exhibition will be open to the public at dlr LexIcon until March 22, 2025, with free admission available to all visitors. This event not only highlights exceptional talent in photography but also fosters community engagement and appreciation for the art of visual storytelling.
