Community Unites to Raise €250,000 for Injured West Cork Teen

In a remarkable display of community support, over €120,000 has been raised in just 48 hours for 13-year-old Féile O’Sullivan, who suffered life-altering injuries in a farm accident in West Cork. The fundraising effort, initiated by local groups, aims to gather €250,000 to assist Féile as she embarks on a long rehabilitation journey following a double leg amputation.
The tragic incident occurred in the Beara region just before Féile’s birthday, leading to her urgent airlift to Cork University Hospital. After undergoing critical medical procedures, she is now receiving specialized care in Dublin. Her recovery process is expected to span at least a year, during which she will need substantial support.
The community has rallied around Féile and her family, with numerous local organizations, including Garnish GAA, Allihies Men’s Shed, and Beara LGFA, launching a fundraising campaign. Initially set to raise €148,000, the goal was quickly surpassed, prompting organizers to increase the target to €250,000. As of now, the fundraiser has accumulated over €120,000, with contributions from more than 1,200 generous donors.
The support has ranged from small donations of €5 to a significant contribution of €30,000 from local resident Tara Cox, who included a heartfelt message: “You are so incredibly brave Féile! You’re in our thoughts and prayers always.”
Local Councillor Finbarr Harrington expressed gratitude for the swift community response. He noted, “It’s phenomenal. We’re only a small community of around 250 adults, and we’re as far out as you can get in County Cork. The decency of Irish people when they see someone in need never ceases to amaze me.”
Councillor Harrington emphasized that this fundraising effort is only the beginning. He remarked on the long road ahead for Féile, highlighting the need for home modifications and an adapted vehicle for her family’s needs. “Her whole life changed in a split second,” he said. “But she will have the support of the people here for the rest of her life. That is what we are all working for together, now.”
The community’s unwavering support for Féile reflects a deep commitment to ensuring she receives the help necessary for her recovery. As the fundraiser continues to gain momentum, contributions can be made through the GoFundMe platform, where supporters can also track its progress.
This heartfelt initiative exemplifies the strong sense of solidarity among the residents of West Cork, as they come together to support a young girl facing significant challenges.
