Derry’s Micheal McCrossan Joins Christmas Swim for Charity
Micheal McCrossan from Derry will participate in the annual Foyle Hospice Christmas Swim to honor the memory of his father, Dermot McCrossan, who received compassionate end-of-life care at the esteemed palliative care center. This event, set for December 2023, aims to support the essential services provided by the hospice, which plays a crucial role in the community.
The Christmas Swim has become a cherished tradition, attracting participants who dive into the chilly waters of the Foyle River. This year, McCrossan’s motivation is deeply personal. His father was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a progressive illness that affects the nervous system and ultimately impacts mobility and speech. Dermot received care from the Foyle Hospice, where he was supported not only medically but also emotionally during his final days.
The event is more than just a swim; it symbolizes hope and unity within the community. Participants often share their stories, highlighting the importance of hospices like Foyle in providing dignity and comfort for patients and their families. Micheal expressed his commitment to raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease and the vital services offered by the hospice.
“
It’s an honor to be part of such a meaningful event, especially in memory of my father. I want to help raise funds and awareness for a cause that is so important to many families in our community,”
McCrossan stated. His participation reflects a growing trend of individuals engaging in charitable activities to support health-related causes.
The Foyle Hospice relies heavily on donations and community support to continue its work. Last year, the Christmas Swim raised over £20,000 for the hospice, demonstrating the generosity and solidarity of local residents. This year, organizers hope to surpass that amount, encouraging more participants and donations.
As the date approaches, McCrossan is training diligently, preparing for the cold waters of December. He invites others to join him, emphasizing that every contribution, whether through participation or donation, makes a difference.
The Christmas Swim not only serves as a tribute to those who have passed but also highlights the ongoing need for hospice care in the region. With community support, Foyle Hospice can continue to provide essential services, ensuring that patients and their families receive the care they deserve during challenging times.
For those interested in supporting the cause, donations can be made directly to the Foyle Hospice website or by participating in the swim. McCrossan’s story is a reminder of the profound impact that compassionate care can have on families and the importance of community involvement in health initiatives.
