Donegal Director Caitríona McLaughlin Showcases Irish Play at Winter Olympics
A new Irish play, directed by Donegal native Caitríona McLaughlin, was recently showcased at the Winter Olympics in Italy. The production, titled Mirandolina, is currently touring northern Italy and Croatia as part of the Cultural Olympiad, which runs alongside the sporting events.
Mirandolina, inspired by Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni’s 1753 masterpiece La Locandiera, was written by Marina Carr, an Associate Artist at the Abbey Theatre. The play explores the life of a young woman navigating a world filled with admirers and predators. This unique presentation marks a significant cultural contribution, as it is the only theatrical piece featured on the international stage of the Winter Olympics.
Charlie McConalogue, Minister of State for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, attended the performance in Padova and praised McLaughlin’s work. “I was delighted to attend Mirandolina, a new Irish play that has been co-produced by the Abbey Theatre and its counterparts in Italy and Croatia,” he stated. He emphasized the cultural significance of the production, noting it as a source of national pride for Ireland.
During his trip, Minister McConalogue highlighted the importance of the Abbey Theatre’s involvement in the Olympics. “It is of great cultural significance that the National Theatre of Ireland has co-produced the only piece of theatre to appear on the international stage of the Cultural Olympiad,” he remarked.
In addition to attending the play, Minister McConalogue participated in an Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) reception. He commended the efforts of Team Ireland’s four athletes competing in the Winter Olympics, including Ben Lynch in freestyle skiing, Anabelle Zurbay in alpine skiing, Thomas Maloney Westgård in cross-country skiing, and Cormac Comerford in alpine skiing. Notably, Lynch achieved a historic milestone by becoming the highest-placed Irish athlete at a Winter Olympics, finishing eighth in the Halfpipe final.
“I truly appreciate the commitment and dedication our Irish athletes have invested to participate at such a high level,” said Minister McConalogue. He acknowledged the combined efforts of the athletes, their coaches, and support from the OFI and the Snow Sports Association of Ireland, stating they have made the country proud during the 25th official Winter Olympic Games.
The Minister also attended a business networking event hosted by Enterprise Ireland in Milan, focusing on the sports technology sector. “This event provided an opportunity to understand the trends and drivers of the sports technology sector in which Irish companies are doing extremely well,” he noted.
The dual focus on culture and sports during this Olympic season highlights Ireland’s commitment to showcasing its artistic talents while supporting its athletes on an international stage.
