The Donegal Sports Star Committee has announced that Eamon Harvey will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the upcoming Donegal Sports Star Awards. The ceremony is set to take place on January 30, 2026, at the Mount Errigal Hotel, marking Harvey as the 50th inductee into this prestigious recognition.

A native of Donegal Town, Harvey has had a profound impact on athletics in the region. He is the eighth individual from an athletics background to receive this honour, joining the ranks of notable figures such as Cyril O’Boyle, Paul Dolan, and Patsy McGonagle. His lifelong commitment to sport began in his early school days in Drimarone, where he cultivated a passion for athletics.

Career Highlights and Contributions

After earning a degree in Physical Education from Manchester University, Harvey began teaching at the then Donegal Town Vocational School, now known as Abbey Vocational School. He served as Assistant Principal for eleven years and took on the role of head of sport until his retirement in 2006. Subsequently, he collaborated with Athletics Ireland during a pivotal time as the organization transitioned to a professional model, focusing on Coach Education and Development.

While Harvey had interests in Gaelic football and basketball, athletics remained his foremost priority. His coaching career began with Irish juvenile teams, which eventually led him to the Olympics and Paralympics. At the 1996 Atlanta Games, he coached Paralympian Bridie Lynch, who won gold in the Women’s Discus F12 event, contributing to a total of five bronze medals for the team.

Harvey continued to coach the Para Ireland team through three subsequent Olympic Games, securing an impressive 18 medals during his tenure. Even after retiring, he has maintained a significant influence at his local club, with one of the highlights being Kelly McGrory’s representation of Ireland at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

A Lasting Legacy and Recognition

To honour his contributions to athletics and the local community, the Donegal Town Eamon Harvey 10km race was inaugurated in 2025. This event features a 5km family fun walk and was officially launched to celebrate Harvey’s legacy. The inaugural event took place in September, with Michael Murphy from Tullamore Harriers AC finishing first, while Noeleen Scanlan from Finn Valley AC was the first female to complete the race, both receiving the Eamon Harvey Perpetual Cup.

Harvey’s contributions have been widely recognized within the athletics community. In 2018, he received a Services to Coaching Award from Athletics Ireland and was inducted into the Ulster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024 for his exceptional dedication and commitment to the sport.

At the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on January 30, Harvey will receive his award from special guest Brian Kerr, further solidifying his legacy within the sporting community of Donegal and beyond.
