Galway Woman Raises €5,000 for Hospice by Running Dublin Marathon
A woman from Galway has raised over €5,000 for the hospice that cared for her father during his final days by completing the Dublin Marathon for the first time. Elaine Moyles, 49, dedicated her run to the memory of her father, Paschal ‘Pat’ Moyles, who received compassionate care at Galway Hospice as he battled cancer.
The marathon, held on October 29, 2023, marked a significant personal achievement for Moyles. She aimed not only to complete the race but to make a meaningful contribution to the hospice that provided invaluable support to her family. “I wanted to give back to the people who were there for us,” she explained.
Moyles’ journey to the finish line was motivated by the memories of her father and the exceptional care he received. During his stay at Galway Hospice, he was surrounded by a supportive environment that offered both medical assistance and emotional comfort. “The staff were incredible. They treated Dad with such dignity and compassion. I can’t thank them enough,” she said.
With a goal to raise funds for the hospice, Moyles utilized social media and community support to garner donations. Her efforts resonated widely, leading to contributions from friends, family, and local businesses. The total amount raised exceeded her expectations, highlighting the community’s willingness to support a worthy cause.
Community Support and Personal Motivation
Moyles’ training for the marathon was intense, involving regular runs and a strict regimen to build her stamina. She described the experience as both physically demanding and emotionally uplifting. “Every time I ran, I thought of Dad and the care he received. It kept me going,” she shared.
The Dublin Marathon is a significant event in the Irish sporting calendar, attracting thousands of participants from various backgrounds. For Moyles, crossing the finish line was a powerful moment of triumph, symbolizing not only her personal achievement but also the collective effort of those who contributed to her fundraising campaign.
The funds raised will directly support the services offered by Galway Hospice, which include palliative care and bereavement support for families facing similar challenges. According to Galway Hospice, the donations will help enhance their facilities and ensure that patients continue to receive high-quality care.
Honoring a Legacy
Moyles hopes her story will inspire others to support local charities, especially those that provide critical services during difficult times. “If I can encourage even one more person to run for a cause, then I’ll feel like I’ve made a difference,” she stated.
Her determination and community spirit serve as a reminder of the profound impact that individual efforts can have on local organizations. As she reflects on her marathon experience, Moyles remains grateful for the support of her community and the dedicated staff at Galway Hospice.
Through her journey, she honors the memory of her father while advocating for the essential services that hospice care provides. The success of her fundraising campaign is a testament to the compassion that binds communities together in times of need.
