The Irish voluntary medical charity CRITICAL has reported an unprecedented surge in emergency calls, marking 2025 as their busiest year to date. The charity, which collaborates closely with the National Ambulance Service, experienced a remarkable 54% increase in calls, attending to 2,022 medical and trauma emergencies last year, compared to 1,308 in 2024.

Significant Impact in Donegal

Among the regions served, Donegal stood out as one of the busiest areas, where volunteers responded to 120 emergency calls. This significant rise in demand underscores the vital role that CRITICAL plays in the local healthcare landscape, particularly in rural areas where immediate medical assistance can be life-saving.

David Tighe, the CEO of CRITICAL, highlighted the charity’s robust operational capacity in Donegal, stating that the response capabilities are well-equipped to handle the growing demand. His commitment to enhancing emergency response efforts is reflected in the charity’s proactive approach to community health.

Community Response and Future Plans

The increasing volume of calls has prompted CRITICAL to reassess its resources and volunteer training programs. Tighe emphasized the importance of community engagement and the need for more volunteers to sustain the charity’s operations effectively. As the demand for emergency medical services continues to rise, CRITICAL is also exploring partnerships with local organizations to bolster support.

This record year serves as both a reflection of the community’s reliance on volunteer services and a call to action for further support and resources. CRITICAL’s mission remains focused on providing timely medical assistance, ensuring that those in need receive care as swiftly as possible.

As 2026 progresses, CRITICAL aims to build on this momentum, seeking not only to meet the existing demand but to enhance their service delivery through additional training and community outreach initiatives. The charity’s efforts will be crucial in maintaining the health and safety of the communities they serve, particularly in areas where access to medical services may be limited.
