Judge Honors Legacy of Beloved Donegal Social Worker Rhona Murphy
Tributes have poured in for Rhona Murphy, a respected social worker from Donegal, who passed away on December 28, 2023, after a brief illness. Before the opening of the Letterkenny District Court session, Judge Emile Daly paid heartfelt respects to Ms. Murphy and extended condolences to her family, reflecting the profound impact she had on the community.
Ms. Murphy, a resident of Buncrana and married to Barry Coady, was a devoted mother to four children. Her funeral took place on New Year’s Eve at Cockhill graveyard, marking a poignant end to a life dedicated to advocating for vulnerable children.
Impact on Child Welfare
In her role as a guardian ad litem, Ms. Murphy provided vital representation for children’s interests in legal proceedings, particularly those concerning child welfare. Judge Daly described her as a “much-loved practitioner” who frequently appeared in court regarding childcare matters. He emphasized that her contributions were invaluable, and her sudden passing has left a significant void in the judicial community.
“She was admired, loved and respected by other practitioners, court staff, Gardai, social workers, and judges,” Judge Daly stated. “Most importantly, she was cherished by the many vulnerable children for whom she advocated, ensuring their voices were heard.” He added that Ms. Murphy always prioritised the best interests of the children.
Having qualified as a social worker in 2000, Ms. Murphy worked with both the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Child and Family Agency. Judge Daly noted her extensive knowledge and her commitment to staying current with developments in her field. “Her judgment was second to none,” he remarked, highlighting her skills in empathy, communication, and problem-solving.
A Lasting Legacy
Judge Daly praised Ms. Murphy’s ability to see potential in challenging situations, stating, “She had a huge heart and a genuine desire to help others.” He added that she approached her work with positivity and a smile, reinforcing her strong connection to her role.
“Rhona always enjoyed her court days in Letterkenny, which is a comfort for practitioners,” Judge Daly said. “Her absence will be felt deeply in this courtroom.”
Ms. Murphy is survived by her husband, Barry Coady, their children Emily, Sophie, Elsa, and Ben, as well as her siblings Denyse, Derek, and Ruth. Her dedication to her profession and the lives she affected will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
