Kilkenny County Council Secures €3.3 Million for Housing Adaptations
Kilkenny County Council has announced a substantial funding boost aimed at supporting essential adaptations for older individuals and people living with disabilities in their homes. The allocation, confirmed by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, totals €2,846,893 for the year 2026. When combined with a minimum of €502,393 in matched funding from the Council’s resources, the overall investment for households in Kilkenny reaches approximately €3,349,286.
Funding Aims to Enhance Living Conditions
This funding package is designed to facilitate vital home adaptation works, enabling older residents and those with disabilities to live safely and independently. Ian Gardner, Acting Director of Services, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “This investment represents a strong commitment to supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”
The Council recognizes that Housing Adaptation Grants play a critical role in allowing residents to maintain dignity, comfort, and safety in their homes. Gardner added, “We welcome the increased national funding and the continued partnership with the Department to deliver these vital supports.”
With this funding, the Council will prioritize applications based on medical need, ensuring that necessary modifications—such as bathroom upgrades, accessibility improvements, and mobility supports—are implemented efficiently.
Emergency Adaptations and Future Plans
In addition to the regular applications, a portion of the funding will be specifically set aside for emergency cases. This will enable Kilkenny County Council to respond promptly to urgent requests for adaptations.
The Council expressed optimism about utilizing this significant funding to provide tangible benefits to households throughout 2026. “We look forward to delivering real and meaningful benefits to households across the county,” the Council stated, highlighting its commitment to enhancing living conditions for those in need.
This investment is part of a broader strategy to address housing challenges and ensure that vulnerable populations receive the support they require to live independently. The continued collaboration between the Council and the Department is expected to yield positive outcomes for the community in the coming years.
