Limerick School Bids Emotional Farewell to Principal Mary McGlinchey
Students at Carnane National School in Limerick surprised their retiring principal, Mary McGlinchey, with a heartfelt song as she concluded her tenure on January 16, 2024. This touching farewell highlighted the impact she had on her pupils over her 36-year career in education, which spanned schools in Laois, Tipperary, and Limerick.
Mrs. McGlinchey, who became principal of Carnane NS in 2000, expressed her gratitude for the students’ efforts and the special bond she formed with them. “There is a particular child in school… this boy’s efforts throughout his time with us has made me most proud,” she stated, referring to a student who exemplified the qualities she values in her pupils.
The students, with assistance from deputy principal Fidelma Reidy, performed a song inspired by the melody of “Caledonia.” The lyrics celebrated Mrs. McGlinchey’s kindness, wisdom, and ability to create a welcoming environment for all. The chorus resonated deeply with the gathered community, as it conveyed their appreciation and love for their principal.
Reflecting on her time at the school, Mrs. McGlinchey noted the importance of personal connections in smaller educational settings. “It has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure every morning to come to Carnane NS,” she said. She emphasized the unique atmosphere of smaller schools where educators can know each student and their individual circumstances, allowing for tailored support.
During her tenure, she established a morning ritual of greeting students and parents at the school gate, a practice that began during the COVID-19 pandemic and continued afterward. “Most problems got solved at the school gate before the child set foot in the classroom,” Mrs. McGlinchey reflected, highlighting the value of community in fostering a positive educational experience.
As she steps away from her role, Mrs. McGlinchey is unsure of her next steps but is looking forward to exploring new opportunities. “I will be doing something completely different,” she remarked, hinting at an exciting new chapter ahead.
The farewell event encapsulated the fond memories and deep respect the school community holds for Mrs. McGlinchey. For many, she will always be remembered as that special teacher who made a lasting impact on their lives.
