Rory McIlroy has been awarded the prestigious title of RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year at the annual RTÉ Sport Awards. This recognition comes after a remarkable year in which McIlroy claimed victory at the Masters, making him only the sixth golfer in history to achieve the Grand Slam by winning all four major championships. This marks his third time receiving the RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year accolade, having previously won in 2011 and 2014.

The announcement follows McIlroy’s recent win of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year on December 14, 2023. His achievements have solidified his status as one of the sport’s most celebrated figures.

Hailing from Ireland, McIlroy’s journey through the year has not only been defined by his victories but also by his resilience and determination, earning him admiration from sports fans worldwide.

Other Award Winners at RTÉ Sport Awards

In addition to McIlroy’s accolade, the event recognized several other outstanding athletes. Young swimmer John Shortt received the title of RTÉ Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year. The Galway native excelled at the European Short-Course Championships, winning gold in the 200m Backstroke, and also secured double gold at the World Junior Championships.

The RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year award went to Stephen Bradley, whose leadership at Shamrock Rovers led the team to a remarkable season. Under his guidance, the Rovers achieved a first League and FAI Cup double since 1987 and successfully qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League league phase.

Kerry’s football team was honored as the RTÉ Sport Team of the Year after their impressive win at the All-Ireland final against Donegal, marking their 39th title. They also claimed the Allianz Football League trophy this year, showcasing their dominance in Irish football.

Hall of Fame Induction

During the ceremony, legendary Irish rugby hooker and captain Ciarán Fitzgerald was inducted into the RTÉ Sport Hall of Fame. Fitzgerald, who captained the Lions and led Ireland to Triple Crown victories, received his award from former teammate Donal Lenihan. His contributions to the sport and his leadership on the field have left an enduring legacy in Irish rugby.

The RTÉ Sport Awards not only celebrate individual achievements but also highlight the collective success of teams and sportspeople who have made significant contributions to their respective sports throughout the year.
