Sosie Triumphs with Maxime Guyon in HK$26 Million Hong Kong Vase
Sosie, ridden by jockey Maxime Guyon, secured a thrilling victory in the prestigious HK$26 million Group 1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase on December 10, 2023. This win marks a significant achievement for trainer Indre Fabre, who becomes the first trainer to win this esteemed race four times, adding another feather to his cap.
From the start, Guyon positioned Sosie strategically, beginning from stall eight and settling just behind the early leader, Eydon. As the race progressed, the pace quickened when Christophe Lemaire launched Urban Chic into the lead, attempting to create separation from the pack. However, as they approached the final stretch, Guyon chose the safer route, moving to the outside of Urban Chic, while Christophe Soumillon took a riskier path up the rail with Goliath.
With less than 200 meters to go, Sosie surged ahead, holding off the defending champion Giavellotto, who finished strong but could not reclaim the top spot. Guyon’s confidence shone through as he reflected on the race, stating, “Everything went very smoothly. This horse can really sustain his run, and he is such a hard horse to pass.”
Sosie’s victory is particularly noteworthy, as it follows earlier wins this season at the Group 1 Prix Ganay and the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan. Guyon praised Sosie’s temperament and adaptability, highlighting that this was the horse’s first journey across continents. “He’s been relaxed every morning this week, and he’s looked amazing,” Guyon added.
In his first outing since winning the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden, Goliath secured third place, while Joseph O’Brien’s Al Riffa, piloted by Dylan Browne McMonagle, finished fourth. McMonagle remarked on Al Riffa’s performance, saying, “He ran a super race,” despite an unideal start. The fifth position was claimed by Los Angeles, ridden by Ryan Moore, who noted, “He ran very well; I was happy with him.”
This year’s event not only showcased exceptional racing talent but also underscored the enduring legacy of Indre Fabre in the world of thoroughbred racing. With Sosie’s remarkable performance, the future looks promising for both horse and rider as they continue to make their mark on international racing.
