Thousands Celebrate International Band Championship in Limerick
This past Sunday, Limerick came alive as thousands gathered to celebrate the 54th International Band Championship despite challenging weather conditions. Rain, wind, and cold temperatures did not deter participants and spectators from enjoying a vibrant display of musical talent and creativity, featuring bands from various regions including Ireland, Britain, Ghana, and the USA.
Competition Highlights and Winners
The highlight of the event was the performance by Banna Chluain Meala from Clonmel, Tipperary, who took home the prestigious title of overall winner. This group, a long-time participant in the championship, also earned the title of best youth band, adding to their accolades during this festive occasion. The competition featured a total of 15 bands, each showcasing impressive routines filled with sharp choreography, baton twirls, and synchronized marching.
The atmosphere in Limerick was electric as the bands paraded through the city streets, culminating in an open-air concert at Arthur’s Quay Park. Here, winners across various categories were announced, including:

Community Spirit and Commitment
Local officials expressed pride in the event’s success. Councillor Sharon Benson, representing Mayor John Moran, remarked, “Today showed Limerick at its brightest and best, alive with music, unity, and unmistakable pride.” She acknowledged the effort of participating bands that traveled great distances to join the celebration, noting that their energy resonated with the enthusiastic crowds.
One of the judges, Niall Carroll, presenter of Classical Daytime on RTÉ Lyric FM, commented on the exceptional standard of performances this year. “Judging wasn’t easy. Every band brought something unique, but that’s what makes this event such a privilege to be part of,” he stated. Evelyn Grant, recently retired from her long-running Weekend Drive programme on Lyric FM, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the remarkable musicianship and creativity displayed by the ensembles.
Joe Delaney, Deputy Council Director General, praised the behind-the-scenes efforts that contributed to the championship’s success, emphasizing the professionalism and creativity of the Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival team. “Their work is the heartbeat of these events and a big part of why Limerick continues to shine on the international stage,” he said.
The celebrations will continue on Monday evening with a free concert at Arthur’s Quay Park, featuring local acts such as Major Feen, The Labourers, Citrus Fresh, Hazey Haze, and Denise Chaila. The festivities will culminate on March 17, 2024, St. Patrick’s Day, with thousands expected to line the streets for the parade, led by grand marshal Ava Crean and showcasing participants from various clubs, communities, and creative groups from Limerick and beyond.
