Trans Activists Reflect on Year Since UK Supreme Court Ruling
The latest issue of Cosmopolitan magazine features a powerful collective of trans stars and activists who reflect on the past year since the UK Supreme Court ruling on the definition of “woman” under the 2010 Equality Act. The ruling, delivered in April 2025, determined that this definition does not encompass trans women holding gender recognition certificates. This decision has led to ongoing uncertainty regarding its implementation, leaving many public bodies awaiting guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Although the court affirmed that trans individuals are protected under UK discrimination laws, many workplaces and public spaces still impose restrictions on access. A recent report from TransActual UK highlighted the increased harassment faced by the UK trans community as a direct result of this ruling.
Voices of Resilience and Advocacy
In this new issue, thirteen trans voices from the UK share their experiences, discussing the fear and uncertainty that has followed the ruling and the efforts of the queer and trans community to advocate for their rights. These individuals have built upon the work of previous generations, striving to uplift and support one another over the past year.
Among those featured are notable figures such as Munroe Bergdorf, Bel Priestley, and Jazmeen Qureshi. Munroe Bergdorf, a model and activist, spoke about the concept of “divide and conquer,” asserting that the rise in anti-trans rhetoric serves as a distraction from other pressing societal issues, such as violence against women and economic hardship.
Bel Priestley, recognized for her role in the popular series Heartstopper, expressed the additional dangers she now faces due to the Supreme Court ruling. “My life is now restricted: I get changed before I go to the gym, if I haven’t got makeup on I won’t go to the toilet, and I would never travel at night,” she explained. The surge in hate crimes, especially in cities once considered safe for the queer community, has been alarming.
Activist Alexandra Parmar-Yee shared how this ruling has ignited her determination to fight back. “I didn’t want to get beaten down and let this become normal,” she stated. Her work with the Trans+ Solidarity Alliance focuses on lobbying for trans rights, reflecting a commitment to activism in the face of adversity.
Highlighting Intersectionality
Jazmeen Qureshi also emphasized the intersectionality of discrimination within the trans community. Although the Supreme Court ruling has affected her life significantly, she highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by Black and brown trans women, who have often lacked meaningful access to the protections that have now been threatened.
The diverse perspectives shared in the magazine illuminate the far-reaching consequences of the Supreme Court ruling while simultaneously celebrating the resilience and advocacy of the trans community. This issue not only documents the challenges faced but also serves as a testament to the strength and determination of those fighting for their rights.
The full feature article is now available online, providing an in-depth look at the experiences of these remarkable individuals and their ongoing fight for equality and recognition.
