15,000 Signatures Demand Retention of Donegal–Dublin Air Link
A petition with over 15,000 signatures will be presented to the Irish government on February 11, 2026, advocating for the retention of the current Donegal–Dublin air link. The initiative is spearheaded by Donegal Cancer Flights and Services, which is concerned about proposed changes to the air service.
The petition comes in response to a draft Public Service Obligation contract that aims to alter the existing air service framework. Reports indicate that the new contract excludes the crucial midday flight that many passengers rely on for travel between Donegal and Dublin. This has raised alarms among residents, particularly those requiring access to medical services and other essential travel needs.
In a statement, the Transport Minister acknowledged the petition but will not be available to meet with representatives on the day it is presented, as he is currently out of the country. He expressed a willingness to arrange a meeting at a later date to discuss the community’s concerns.
The Donegal–Dublin air link has been vital for many in the region, particularly those with health-related travel requirements. The potential loss of the midday service could significantly impact accessibility, prompting local advocacy groups to rally support for maintaining the current schedule.
The decision to alter the air link service has sparked a broader discussion about transportation accessibility in rural areas of Ireland. Community leaders emphasize the importance of ensuring that all citizens have reliable access to essential services, particularly in regions like Donegal, where public transport options can be limited.
As the presentation of the petition approaches, supporters are encouraged to voice their concerns to local representatives and emphasize the value of the air link for the community’s well-being. The outcome of this initiative may influence future transportation policies and the availability of essential services in the region.
