Cork Entrepreneur Urges Urgent Action to Tackle Housing Crisis
In a recent interview, Michael O’Flynn, Chairman and CEO of the Flynn Group, called for immediate action to address Ireland’s ongoing housing crisis. Speaking on the Life and Leadership podcast with host Bobby Kerr, O’Flynn attributed the current situation to years of underdevelopment and ineffective government responses.
O’Flynn, who has been involved in the property sector for 47 years, highlighted the consequences of halting development during the financial crash. He stated, “We created the crisis. We stopped development during the financial crash. We’ve been undersupplying for years.” His comments reflect a growing concern among industry leaders about the challenges faced by prospective homebuyers in Ireland today.
From his offices in Ballincollig, O’Flynn expressed his disbelief at the difficulties young couples encounter when trying to purchase homes. “When I sold houses, a normal couple could buy a house. Now we’ve created a situation where that can’t happen,” he remarked. The entrepreneur emphasized that the current cost of living and housing has made homeownership increasingly unattainable for many.
O’Flynn also criticized the slow pace of government action in addressing these pressing issues. He pointed out that excessive red tape hampers building projects and delays solutions. “I am very concerned about the lack of speed in dealing with these housing issues in Ireland. Not enough is being done quickly,” he said.
To tackle the crisis effectively, O’Flynn proposed a focus on servicing land designated for construction. He believes that with the right mechanisms in place, solutions could be implemented swiftly. “Make sure you service land that’s going to be built on. I believe these issues could be solved quickly, but there’s no mechanisms to do that,” he noted.
Drawing on his extensive experience, including navigating the Nama years, O’Flynn highlighted the necessity for decisive action, financial discipline, and practical support for development initiatives. He underscored the importance of retaining talent within Ireland, stating, “The reality is, we have a fantastic education system in this country. We need to keep our people here.”
As the housing crisis continues to evolve, O’Flynn’s insights offer a critical perspective on the urgent need for effective strategies to ensure affordable housing for future generations. The call for swift government intervention and streamlined processes reflects a broader sentiment among industry leaders advocating for immediate action to resolve one of Ireland’s most pressing social issues.
