Discover Your Irish Ancestry with New Surname Mapping Tool
Genealogist Barry Griffin has launched an innovative online tool that allows individuals to trace the geographical roots of over 6,000 Irish surnames. By utilizing data from the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses, Griffin has created a detailed map showing where each surname was most concentrated throughout Ireland. This resource is particularly valuable for those seeking to explore their Irish ancestry.
Griffin’s website provides users with insights into the popularity of various surnames and their historical significance. The comprehensive database is designed to aid genealogical research, making it easier for users to connect with their heritage. The tool will be especially useful for those investigating their family histories or looking to understand more about their Irish roots.
Mapping Process and Surname Grouping
In compiling this database, Griffin has adhered to specific guidelines to ensure accuracy. He notes, “When producing these maps, I use the exact spelling in the 1901/1911 Irish Census, with the following exceptions: All surnames are converted to their uppercase equivalents.” This means that surnames such as Mac Vey and McVey are displayed together as MACVEY. Similarly, variations of the surname O’Neill are grouped as ONEILL for consistency.
The mapping process is meticulous and time-consuming. Despite the potential for some surnames to be missing from the database, Griffin assures users that all rankings are accurate and account for any omissions. Surnames are sorted according to the last capital letter in the name, a feature that enhances the user experience when navigating the data.
Increased Interest in Irish Genealogy
The launch of this surname mapping tool comes at a time of heightened interest in genealogy, particularly among those with Irish heritage. People are increasingly eager to uncover their family histories, and resources like Griffin’s website facilitate this exploration. He encourages users to reach out via his Facebook page if they have inquiries about surnames not included in the database.
Griffin’s initiative not only provides a wealth of information but also serves as a community resource for those engaged in genealogical research. The site is a testament to the growing trend of utilizing technology to connect individuals with their ancestral backgrounds.
