Donegal Roads Director Urges Caution Amid Winter Conditions
The Director of Roads Services for Donegal County Council, Bryan Cannon, has called on drivers to exercise caution while traveling, following challenging winter weather conditions across the region. On January 5, 2026, Cannon confirmed that all roads included in the council’s winter gritting programme were treated, although some issues arose in Letterkenny and along the N15 in the southern part of the county. These problems have since been addressed.
Ongoing Road Safety Efforts
During an interview on The Greg Hughes Show, Cannon emphasized the importance of adapting driving habits to current conditions. He stated that despite ongoing efforts, which include patrolling the 1,100 kilometres covered by the gritting programme, the situation remains precarious. “Assume that no road is ice-free,” Cannon urged, reflecting the potential hazards that drivers may face.
In addition to advising motorists, the council continues to monitor weather developments and road conditions closely. As winter progresses, it is essential for the public to remain vigilant and prepared for changing circumstances. The council’s proactive measures aim to ensure the safety of all road users during this challenging season.
Community Impact and Awareness
Local authorities are keen to raise awareness about the importance of driving safely in adverse weather. With winter conditions expected to persist, it is crucial for drivers to remain informed and exercise caution. Cannon’s message serves as a reminder of the responsibility each driver has to navigate safely, particularly in areas prone to ice and snow.
As communities come together to face these winter challenges, the council encourages open communication and cooperation among residents. By sharing information and heeding safety advice, the likelihood of accidents can be reduced, ensuring safer travels for everyone on the roads.
For further updates on road conditions and safety advisories, residents are encouraged to stay connected with Donegal County Council’s communications. The council is committed to providing timely information and support to facilitate safe driving during this winter season.
