Gunmen Attack Hanukkah Celebration at Bondi Beach, 12 Dead
At least 12 people have died following a shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney during a Hanukkah celebration. The attack, which occurred on December 7, 2023, targeted members of the Jewish community as they gathered for this significant holiday event. Local authorities confirmed that one of the shooters is among the deceased, while the second gunman is reported to be in critical condition. In total, 29 individuals, including two police officers, have been hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident.
The shooting took place amidst a festive atmosphere, as hundreds of families participated in the annual Hanukkah celebration, featuring the lighting of the menorah and various family-friendly activities. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the assault as a “targeted attack on Jewish Australians,” describing it as “an act of evil antisemitism, terrorism, that has struck the heart of our nation.”
In a statement, Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, emphasized the shocking nature of the violence, stating, “What should have been a night of peace and joy… has been shattered by this horrifying evil attack.” The event was one of the largest in the local Jewish calendar, and many attendees expressed their disbelief and sorrow at the events that unfolded.
International leaders also reacted to the tragedy. Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, labeled the incident as terrorism, extending condolences to the Jewish community in Sydney. He remarked, “Our hearts go out to our Jewish sisters and brothers in Sydney who have been attacked by vile terrorists as they went to light the first candle of Hanukkah.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her heartfelt condolences and asserted that “Europe stands with Australia and Jewish communities everywhere.” Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s chief diplomat, called for unequivocal condemnation of the violence against the Jewish community, reflecting a broader international concern regarding antisemitism.
This incident marks a significant escalation in violence, representing Australia’s worst mass shooting in decades. Following the tightening of gun laws in response to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, the country has seen a marked decline in gun violence. The attack at Bondi Beach raises serious questions about public safety and the ongoing threat of targeted violence against minority communities.
Local police are continuing their investigation into the incident, with efforts focused on determining whether additional assailants were involved. As the community mourns the loss of life, the focus now shifts to ensuring safety and security for all citizens, particularly during significant cultural and religious celebrations.
