Irish Minister Guarantees Increased Garda Protection for Jewish Community
The Irish government has pledged to enhance security for the Jewish community following a recent terrorist attack in Sydney that left at least 16 people dead. Jim O’Callaghan, the Justice Minister, confirmed he sought assurances from Justin Kelly, the Garda Commissioner, regarding increased protective measures in Ireland. This decision comes in response to the violent incident at Bondi Beach on December 3, 2023, which targeted a Jewish community celebrating Hanukkah.
In a conversation with Kelly on Sunday evening, O’Callaghan emphasized the importance of ensuring “adequate protection” and noted that discussions about security had taken place “many months ago.” He stated that both he and Yoni Wieder, the Chief Rabbi of Ireland, received assurances from Kelly about his commitment to the safety of the Jewish community.
O’Callaghan plans to attend a Hanukkah event on December 4, expressing solidarity with the Jewish community in Ireland. “I want to reassure them of our support in the aftermath of the appalling terrorist attack in Sydney,” he said.
Earlier on Sunday, Helen McEntee, Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, stated that the Department of Foreign Affairs was “not aware” of any Irish citizens directly impacted by the attack. She conveyed that the Irish consulate in Sydney would continue to monitor the situation and maintain close contact with local citizens and the community.
In her statement, McEntee expressed her “shock and horror” at the antisemitic act, stating, “All my thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones and the people of Australia.” The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with condolences flowing from various Irish officials.
Irish President Catherine Connolly extended her sympathies, saying, “I offer these condolences on behalf of the people of Ireland to the people of Australia, especially all who have lost loved ones and those who have been injured.”
In a statement shared on social media, Micheal Martin, the Taoiseach, expressed his dismay: “Our prayers go to the families and friends of those lost, the injured, first responders, and the people of Australia at this distressing time. Such hate and violence can never be tolerated.”
Similarly, Simon Harris, the Tánaiste, described himself as “horrified” by the attack. He emphasized that “the spectre of hate and violence must never be tolerated,” extending thoughts and support to the affected families and the broader Jewish community during this painful time.
As the situation unfolds, the Irish government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its Jewish citizens, reflecting a united stance against antisemitism and violence.
