Kremlin Confirms Upcoming Meeting Between Putin and Trump
The Kremlin has officially announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump “in the coming days.” This confirmation comes as Trump has imposed a deadline for a ceasefire in Ukraine by the end of the week. According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, a preliminary agreement has been reached at the suggestion of the American side to hold a high-level bilateral meeting.
This meeting arrives amid escalating tensions over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Trump expressing frustration over what he perceives as Putin’s slow progress in ceasefire negotiations. The U.S. President has threatened to implement stringent tariffs on Russia and on nations that maintain business ties with it. Trump has already enacted a 50 percent tariff on India due to its continued importation of Russian oil.
As the deadline approaches, Trump has been briefing key European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the planned meeting. Trump has also proposed a potential trilateral meeting involving both Putin and Zelenskyy. In a recent address, Zelenskyy noted that “Russia now seems to be more inclined toward a ceasefire,” suggesting that the pressure from the U.S. may be influencing Moscow’s stance. However, he cautioned that it is crucial to ensure that no party is misled in the negotiations.
In July, Trump had given Putin a 50-day timeframe to negotiate a ceasefire agreement, which he later shortened to August 8 due to growing frustrations with the Russian leader’s lack of cooperation. This increased urgency coincided with a meeting between Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin in Moscow, aimed at reaffirming the need for progress.
Ushakov indicated that a venue for the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting has been agreed upon “in principle,” although he did not disclose specific details about the location. This high-stakes dialogue is expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of U.S.-Russia relations and the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
