Learner Drivers Face Uncertainty as Testers Prepare to Strike

Learner drivers in Ireland are facing uncertainty regarding their driving tests scheduled for Friday, February 20, 2024. This disruption is due to planned strike action by driving testers affiliated with the Fórsa trade union. The union’s decision comes amid growing concerns about the use of uninsured vehicles during driving assessments.

The strike is set to commence at 08:15 and will continue until 17:30 on the same day. If the action proceeds as planned, it could result in numerous tests being cancelled. The decision to strike follows unsuccessful negotiations at the Workplace Relations Commission, according to a report by RTÉ.

The primary issue prompting the strike is the lack of a national insurance verification system, which has left testers unable to confirm whether vehicles presented for driving tests are properly insured. Ruairi Creaney, a representative from Fórsa, emphasized the risks involved: “Exposing driver testers to this level of potential risk makes no sense.”

In addition to the one-day strike, there is a possibility of indefinite action. This would involve testers refusing to conduct assessments unless a valid certificate of insurance is provided by the learner driver. The union has raised concerns about the adequacy of protections for driving testers, stating that the Road Safety Authority should ensure they are covered by the State Claims Agency while performing their duties.

Fórsa conducted a vote last month among its members, which led to the decision to proceed with the strike action. The situation has sparked anxiety among learner drivers and their families, many of whom have been preparing for their tests for weeks.

As the strike date approaches, the union is urging the relevant authorities to address the issues at hand to avoid further disruptions.
