Two horses were seized by the Limerick City and County Council from a business park on the outskirts of Limerick City just before Christmas. On December 23, 2023, an eight-year-old brown and white female horse, along with a one-and-a-half-year-old brown and white male horse, were taken from the Blackberry Business Park on the Dock Road.

The council confirmed that the owners or keepers of these abandoned animals remain unidentified. According to the council’s statement, horses that are seized and not claimed by their owners within five days are re-homed to shelters outside of Limerick. This procedure is in accordance with the 1996 Control of Horses Act, which governs the management and welfare of horses in such circumstances.

The decision to seize the horses reflects the ongoing efforts by local authorities to address the issue of abandoned animals, ensuring their safety and well-being. The council has emphasized its commitment to animal welfare and the importance of responsible pet ownership.

As the situation develops, the council encourages anyone with information about the horses or their owners to come forward. This incident highlights the broader issue of animal abandonment, which poses significant challenges for communities and local governments.
